Another sleepless night with another nightmare. They come and go but I never have hope they will be gone for good. Over the years I have been accustomed to not being able to sleep some nights but I have learned how to pass the time. There only is one answer, reading. I have read book after book and sometimes twice till I could buy another one.

Wedging the tattered bookmark between the pages, I gently close the book. Side glancing to peek at my clock on my bed side table it appeared to be 7:30 AM.

Great... work starts in an hour and I still have to get ready but lucky for me I actually enjoy my job.  I have been working downtown at the local clinic for the past five years, around the same time my father passed away. A stray tear had found it's way down my cheek aiming it's salty bitterness to my lips but only to be furiously wiped away with the pad of my thumb. Not today, especially not today Alexandria Elizabeth Coleman.

Peeling off the duvet I finally felt the cold breeze sweep through the warmth I created underneath throughout the night. The soft tips of my toes reached the cold floor wiggling around searching for warmth. Swiftly my legs guided me to the bathroom and my nostrils were instantly filled with the fresh scent of lavender before my eyes landed on my charm bracelet. There was one charm in particular I cherished, the Golden Gate bridge.

"Hey Dad I won't be home for awhile. Stacy needs help with a new rescue and he is in bad shape. I will be late for dinner but don't wait up I know you have had a vigorous time at work. Drive safe. I love you."

A sigh passed my lips in defeat when I headed back towards Stacy in the lounge area located in the back of the clinic. Her amber eyes glanced up from the new puppy to land her sight on me standing in the door way. Sliding two cokes infront of her using her free hand, she ushers me to take a seat.

"So, did he pick up?"

"No. Straight to voicemail." I stared at the Golden Gate bridge connected to the charm bracelet on my wrist before popping open the soda can and taking a sip.

"He isn't going to be mad at you Elizabeth. I know he has been gone because of a work thing but, I promise you he will be happy to see you." Her words were thick with guilt but I couldn't understand why. There has been many occasions when I had to stay at work late, so why is this any different? Choosing not to ponder with my newfound thoughts I pursed my chapped lips before speaking.

"I miss him, Stacy. It has been the longest two months without him and mom has been working night shifts. The house is not just empty... it's lonely."  I felt too weak to look her in the eyes not when I feel her staring at me.

"You know if I didn't have this strong cutie sleeping in my arms right now I'd crush you in a hug." We both chuckled at her antics. Stacy has always been dramatic but it's probably why her and my dad are such good friends. She is always dramatic with words while he is overly sarcastic.

"Do you think the little guy will pull through Stacy?" Leaning forwards I was able to see the little guy with his eyes shut softly. He had bandages around his hind legs from the wired fence he was trapped in earlier.

"Yes I do Elizabeth. Do you want to know why?"

Quirking an eyebrow, I knew she was pushing on my inner curiosity. "Tell me, please."
