Chapter 8
It was incredible. The setup was wonderfully decorated, and I was astonished to find it leaving me breathless. There was a large gazebo with the hundreds of vampires that had been at the gifting ceremony. I shivered at the thought of being gifted to anyone, even if that someone is the love of my life. Was, I rethought sadly. My thoughts were carried away as I dwelled on if I still loved Sam. But they were brought right back when someone cleared their throat and I returned to the current scene.
I wasn't sure who had cleared their throat, but as the bone-breaking fear took place in me, it didn't matter. I stared back at hundreds of eyes on me. All of them wearing old-fashioned ensembles. I secretly searching for Sam, but to no avail. I gulped. Not a sound was made. Not a movement was seen. Not a voice was heard. Not a breath was inhaled. Except for mine, which was ragged and heavy. I had to remember to act calm and my life could be on the line. My heart was pounding and my hands were shaking.
"Good evening, children," Edmond announced. "Tonight the celebration of our ancestors begins." I heard a large sound and covered my ears, then realized it was just the clock that had struck a new hour. Edmond lifted his arms to the now darkened sky. The moon the only source of light that shone on the scene. "As the clock turns midnight, our time has come to rise. Our ancestors looking up on us, the slaughter of our kind engraved in their brains. Tonight, we release those who have been waiting. Tonight all hell will be set loose!" His voice was getting louder and louder with every sentence and he was now screaming, though I doubted they needed the extra decibels. "Tonight, we will avenge the lives that have slipped through our fingers! Tonight and for eternity!"
As the night continued on, the fear grew. After Edmond had said his speech, not only was I confused but scared.
"Tonight, we release those who have been waiting. All hell will be set loose!" The words echoed in my head.
The many different meanings of those words swirled around in my head as I tried to figure them out. I stood next to a long rectangular table that stretched out far enough for us all to fit. But of course I would not sit as Edmond explained.
"Unfortunately, the vampire might take offence if you sit with us," he whispered. "I asked Hayley to feed you earlier."
"Where do I stay then?" I had to ask even thought the fear had overcome me. I shifted as all the vampires had moved to the table, eyes still on me.
Edmond frowned, looking uncertain. "Just go sit on the bench in the gazebo and wait until we have finished. We shan't be long, but patience is always golden." He smiled at me, but I didn't return it.
"Count Edmond, will you be joining us soon?" Carter asked sarcastically.
