Being excited for today would be an understatement. Every summer, I’m a camp counselor at a sleepaway camp. Every single day between June 29th and August 1st I can make people smile and honestly that’s the best thing I could ask for. After running my fingers through my hair, I pull my sneakers on and head over to the main building to get my kids’ names. I got lucky this year by getting the 9-10 year olds. They’re old enough to not be a big hassle, but not old enough to think they’re better than you. “Ivy!” Ally said running over to me

        “Ally!” I yelled hugging her

Ally and I became friends ever since we shared a bunk back when we were campers. After light’s out we would pass a notebook back and forth to talk to each other. I wish we could have been placed in the same cabin, but I got another girl named Emily. “What age group did you get?” I asked

“The five and six year olds.” she said smiling

“I’d go insane with ones that young. I still wonder why their parents send them to sleepaway camp.” I said shaking my head

“You just don’t like them because they repeat any sarcastic comments you make.” she said laughing

I rolled my eyes as I heard the door bells jingle. “I am professional. Any comments they repeat are from someone else or simply coincidence.”

Ally stopped responding. She was looking at the guy who just walked in. I smacked her arm. “Oh come on. We don’t fall for other counselors, let alone a newbie.”

She whipped around giving me a look. “I am not falling for him. I am clearly standing on the ground first of all, and second of all that is your rule. Not mine.”

“Well make sure you keep for feet planted on the ground, he’s coming over here. I wonder why we didn’t see him in training. Maybe he went to the other sessions.”

I could see why Ally was looking at the guy. He was pretty attractive, and extremely tall. I never date guys at camp though. There really is not time to be together anyways besides lunch and big camp activities and even then you’re distracted by them and not watching the kids. Also, I have no interest in relationships. The last one ended badly when I found him kissing another girl. Mr. Giant has decided to say something to us. “Hey! I’m Jacob.”

He looked expectantly at me as he reached his hand out. “Should I shake your hand or…?” he said

“Oh yeah sorry I’m just kind of not used to that.” I say shaking his hand “Ivy. And we’re family here at camp. You don’t need to go around shaking hands.”

“Hi! I’m Ally and I also apologize for Ivy’s unacknowledgement of your manners.” she said and shook his hand

He chuckled and smiled at me. “Nah it’s fine. I find your friend quite cute.”

Oh my God. Another one of these. I don’t do compliments. Meanwhile, Ally is beaming like the kid just wrote a song dedicated to my presence. “I call BS. Now, if you excuse me I am going to get my list of campers.” I said walking off to the front desk.

“The list for Sunlight?” I said to Mary

She was one of the oldest people working here. She’s been here since the camp opened years ago.

“Ivy! I’m happy to see you again.” she said handing me the list

I smiled. “I’ll be coming here until I’m your age Mary. Trust me.” I said looking over the names on the paper.
