The doorbell rings and I get up off the couch to answer it. I open the door to see Kaya crying. Her mascara, dripping down her face, her hair in tangles, she looked like hell. “Kaya?!” I gasp, pulling her into my arms and hugging her. “What happened?” I ask. “I-I-I saw him.” She says, her voice raspy and weak. I shut the door and bring her up to my room so when my parents come home they don't find her here. “Saw who?” I ask. “Aiden.” She says, the way she says his name is as cold as ice and has no emotion whatsoever. “Who is that?” I ask. “My twin.” She says, ignoring the shocked and confused look on my face. She lays down on my bed and just looks at the ceiling. “You never-” I begin to say. “Told you that I have a brother.” She interrupts me. I nod. “He's a scumbag.” She says simply, refusing to even look at me.
A few minutes later, Kaya passed out on my bed and my parents came home. I walk downstairs and greet them. My mother scans the room and looks at me. “Where is she?” She asks. “Who?” I ask. “Kaya.” She says. “She isn't here.” I lie. My mother scoffs. “I know her smell from a mile away. She smells like a washed up rat.” My mother says, walking upstairs to find Kaya. “Fuck.” I mutter under my breath, chasing after my mother. Kaya doesn't smell like a washed up rat, she just always smells like cigarettes and alcohol.
I rush in front of my bedroom door before my mother can get to it. My mother raises her eyebrow and looks at me. Just as she starts reaching for the door handle, the door opens behind me. “Oh. Linda!” Kaya says, smiling at my mother. My mother glares at her and walks downstairs, not saying a word. “Is she here?” My father asks. “I'M HERE, DONALD!” Kaya yells. I hear a faint growl from downstairs. “Don't call my parents by their first names.” I say. She rolls her eyes and walks back into my room.
I follow after her. “Kaya, I don't know if I can keep being your friend. My parents hate you and all you do is cause me trouble.” I say. Kaya looks at me silently and walks over to my window and opens it. “What are yo-” I begin as she jumps out of my window and I hear her feet land. I look out my window and she is already gone.
