Prologue.
"Cassie, this is Mave, your Tita Mae's son." Mom introduced the boy in front of me. He's wearing a dark blue polo tucked in black pants. I smiled as I waved my hand at him, while him, he keep his straight face.
"Grabe you really look like your mother when we were 15, she also used to wear glasses and braces back then." sabi ni Tita Mae while examining me, I just smiled kasi sanay na'ko sa gan'yang remarks. I got bullied a lot because of my looks, they would call me different names like nerdy, wire girl, and many more.
She's right though, magkamukhang magkamukha kami ni Mom nung bata siya but she's still pretty even with glasses, braces, and frizzy hair. While me, I am born to be ugly.
"Cassie, Mave, iiwan muna namin kayo so that you two can get along while we'll catch up with each other." paalam ni Tita Mae at kita ko ang pag-angal sa mukha ni Mave pero wala na siyang nagawa.
"Hi! So, do you want to read books with me? We have our own library here, tara!" masayang sabi ko sakan'ya at hinawakan siya sa wrist para sana hilahin siya pero agad niyang tinanggal ang pagkakahawak ko.
"Let go of me! I don't want to be your friend." inis na sabi niya bago naglakad palayo. Napangiti nalang ako ng mapait bago siya sinundan.
Pagkalabas ko sa garden kung saan siya nagpunta, naabutan ko siyang nakikipaglaro kay Choco, my 4 months old dog. I smiled before walking towards their direction.
"His name is Choco. I got him as a reward for being the top one of our class." nakangiting sabi ko, nanatili siyang tahimik at hindi pinansin ang sinabi ko.
"He's usually masungit to new people but I guess you're an exception. I think he likes you." sabi ko which is true. I remember how he would always bark on me when I first got him pero ngayon ay mabait na siya sa'kin.
"Do you have a dog?" I asked him but I got no answer from him. I sighed before walking towards the garden table, I'll just watch him since he doesn't want to talk to me.
Maybe he don't like my appearance too? Or he also think that I am a book-worm nerd that's interested on weird things that's why other kids don't get along with me.
"Cassie?" I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard my older brother, Chandler, called me.
"Kuya." bati ko nang makarating siya sa garden. He's still wearing his jersey uniform, seems like he'll play basketball with his friends.
"Oh, who's this?" he asked while looking at Mave who's already looking at him.
"He's Mave, Tita Mae's son. They just moved here." nakangiting pagpapakilala ko kay Mave.
"Hi! I'm Chandler, her older brother. Do you play baskeball?" tanong ni Kuya at nakipag fist bump pa kay Mave which he gladly accepts.
"Yeah." sagot sakan'ya ni Mave.
"Tara, sali ka sa'min maglaro. I'll introduce you to my friends." nakangiting aya sakan'ya ni Kuya habang napasimangot naman ako. How come he look so friendly when it comes to my brother? Tapos sa'kin ang sungit niya.
Yeah, right. Unlike me, my brother doesn't wear braces or glasses. Dami ngang nagkakagusto sakan'ya eh.
"Okay, magpapaalam lang ako kay Mom." nakangiting sabi ni Mave. Wow, he knows how to smile pala. Kung ayaw mo'ko maging kaibigan, edi wag!
