"If you meet a loner, no matter what they tell you, it's not because they enjoy solitude. It's because they have tried to blend into the world before, and people continue to disappoint them."
― Jodi Picoult, My Sister's Keeper
As I approached my apartment I noticed two figures standing outside my door. To me, this is unheard of, someone coming to see me. My family and I have an unspoken agreement that they contact me only through phone any other kind of communication or contact would be torture for both parties involved. I have one friend who I just left at a bar a half an hour ago so it couldn't be her. This is why it seemed so strange to her that two people would be waiting for her outside her door.
As I approached further I realised the two unknown figures were my parents. This could only mean one thing; bad news. It would have to be bad enough that they wouldn't tell me over the phone. They didn't see her approaching not even with the sound of her heels clicking with each step she took. When I reached them I simply slipped past them open the door and called out to them
"Come in, no point in indulging in pleasantries may as well get this over and done with"
I kept my back to them both but I knew they had come in by the sound of their footsteps and the door closing. Not wanting to waste any time I turned to them and said;
"C'mon don't waste time just rip off the band aid tell me what's wrong, you wouldn't be here unless there was something wrong and you couldn't inform me over the phone"
It was her mother you replied first her mother was always a very prim and proper woman. She was brought up in England and went to school in Harvard where she met my father. The woman never spoke out of turn or made rude comments was always polite and mannerly. She never had a bit of hair out of place or make up smudged she was the definition of perfection even in the midst of the tragedy her family was clearly going through due to her parents presence in her apartment she was still as perfect as ever sitting mannerly with her legs crossed and fingers crossed around her knee.
"Well, I'm afraid dear something has happened to Alecto, he has managed to get himself into some rather serious trouble"
She even made breaking made news sound serine and gentle somehow.
"He always could attract trouble no matter where he went. How bad is it? Jail bad? Big bail bad?"
"Embezzling money from a wall street firm bad." My father replied with a grim look on his face, the look wasn't there because he was in trouble; the look was there because they were forced to admit that their perfect son, the almighty Alecto, was not perfect.
"What are you going to do? You do know he will serve time for this there's no way around it?" This is where things got interesting, I had been watching my mother throughout this conversation and as I said this she slowly let a smug look creep upon her face as if she knew I had fallen for the trap they had set just like I did every single time.
"Oh but there is. There's been a request made, a settlement. All you have to do is comply with the terms of the settlement"
"Why do I have to comply with the terms of the settlement its Alecto's settlement he's the one who has to comply?"
"Just come home with us and we will explain it all, we promise." My father approached me and gave me his 'you are going to do this' look. He wasn't joking whatever was going on it was deadly serious.
My head began spinning with confusion. Why would Alecto's settlement agreement involve me it makes no sense. He was the one who embezzled money he should have to comply pay the money, whatever the firm was demanding. Why would his firm even know about me? This all feels creepy, there's something going on that their not telling me about and I want in on it. Especially if it's going to affect my life. They made their bed all those years ago. Years of neglect have shaped mine and my parent's relationship. They over looked me at every turn and only ever paid attention to Alecto, my whole family did it. Alecto over looked me, he only acknowledged our older sister Cara's existence. I was always just a figure in the background to them.
"I'll come home, and then you're going to tell me what the hell is going on. Then I'll decide if I want to agree to Alecto's settlement terms if I don't he go inside for what he did I really don't care." I hissed at my parents.
My mother was never a woman to lose her temper but for once she did."How DARE you! He is your only brother and you would just let him rot in a prison somewhere for your own selfish reason. You would just ignore his own wishes and his families-"
"Yes I would ignore his wishes and yours and dad's and Cara's because you all always ignored me! I don't owe this family anything you know that better than anyone MOTHER! The way you spoke there said it all you said 'You would just ignore his own wishes and his families' you clearly don't consider me family anymore. It must kill you that I'm the only one who can save your precious Alecto from rotting in a prison cell, but then again maybe you're glad because if the price you're asking me to pay is high enough you'd be glad because you wouldn't want your darling Cara sacrificing anything of hers when I could just do it. Don't sit there and think I can't see through you that I don't know what's going on and that I won't stand up for myself anymore because that is anything but the truth. I'll come with you I'll look over the terms im not promising anything more than that."
