CHAPTER 1: A DAUGHTER'S DEFICIENCY

Vanessa stands at her locker, gathering her belongings to head home. She notices the picture of her mother that she taped to the inside. She stares at it as a tear begins to form and slide down her cheek, so slowly and smoothly.

She wipes the tear away and sniffles. She closes her locker and heads out the door. She sits on the steps waiting for her father. Once he arrives, she gets into the car and shuts the door, exhaling with a sigh of relief.

"Hello, dad."

"Hey, honey, how was school?"

"As it is every other day. Boring."

He starts the car and heads home. He notices she's pondering a thought.

"What's wrong?", he asks her.

"When are we going to see mama?"

"I already told you, baby, she packed up and left out of nowhere. She told no one where she was going."

"Not even grandma and grandd--"

"No, NO ONE", he interrupts.

Vanessa's father, Adam, never shed a tear for his wife and the mother of their daughter, Lauren. He never showed emotion. It was as if he'd never cared for Lauren, never mourned to know where she went, never felt that a part of him had been taken away, or at least cared that her daughter was empty and completely lost without her mother.

They pulled into the driveway. She gathered her things and walked into the house. She immediately went up to her room and closed the door quietly.

Vanessa Lanie had boring black hair and pale skin. Her appearance reflected her feelings. She felt empty and plainful. She wasn't the average 16 year old girl. She never wore makeup or fancy clothes. Maybe some lip gloss, light mascara and eyeliner. She used to be into her looks, but that was when she used to have pamper days with her mom. They would do each other's makeup, hair, and dress each other up. Ever since her mother left, she has never been the same.
