Chapter 6 : Ruby's backstory

A/N: as promised, here's the next chapter: a little backstory on Ruby's character! Hope you guys like it and please rate and review! :D

Ruby's parents passed away when she was only 12 years old. Ever since then, she had to take responsibility and ascend to the throne. That's right. Ruby is the Queen of the Fire kingdom. Although she prefers princess, as queen makes her sound very old. Although young, she makes a very good leader. She is confident and stoic, able to work calmly and efficiently under pressure. Now that six years have passed since her reign, she has also become quite powerful. However, her circle of friends has not increased at all. That is the one thing that the Fire queen does not have. Friends. Of course, she has her childhood friends Marcus, who is now her advisor, and Mia, but that's about it. The biggest reason is probably because Ruby appears to be emotionless and mean. Although Mia and Marcus, being her friends, would disagree.

Mia always thought that Ruby was a great friend and saw her as the sister she never had (because unfortunately she was "blessed" with a brother instead). Before her parents passed away, Ruby was like any young child; curious, always happy, and easily excited. However, after that tragic day, Ruby changed. The death of her parents forced Ruby to mature and become independent almost too soon. For how can a 12-year-old possibly shoulder the responsibility of running a kingdom? But somehow, Ruby managed to do it. This new Ruby became almost emotionless, locking up all her feelings and emotions. She didn't even cry when the sad news of her family's death was brought to her. However, although she appears to be emotionless, there's one thing about Ruby that didn't change. Mia knew how much Ruby still cared for her, her brother, and the whole Fire nation. Buried deep, deep inside of her, Ruby can still feel happiness, sadness, anger, and anguish, and as the years have gone by, she has started showing them more as well.

Similarly, Marcus thinks very fondly of Ruby as well. In Mia's opinion, a little too fondly. To him, Ruby is charismatic, caring and is a great friend. It's true that she is very blunt, isn't very good at conveying her feelings, and often says and does the opposite of what she feels, but he knows that inside, she is really compassionate and warm. Marcus and Mia's parents and the late king and queen were very good friends, which is how he became close friends with Ruby. They've been together for as long as he can remember.

Marcus is and was always a very kind person. He is very accepting and understands how others feel. On top of all that, he is extremely intelligent, of course, Mia begs to differ. Because although he's good at many things, Marcus has absolutely no skill when it comes to confessing his feelings. He has had a crush on Ruby for as long as she can remember, but still hasn't been able to tell Ruby his feelings yet. Though to be fair, it was only partially her brother's fault. After all, with Mia's help, he has been dropping more than obvious clues about his feeling towards Ruby, Ruby's simply too unsuspecting to notice them. But Marcus was okay with how things are now. Being able to stay by her side everyday was more than enough.
