Jade watched as Newt bolted through the closing doors and landed on the rough stone ground. She saw Thomas had done the same, seconds before Newt. Minho and Jade were now kneeling on the ground, Alby behind them on the ground. Newt scrambled to his feet and hugged Jade tightly, while Minho spoke to Thomas.

"Good job," Minho congratulated. "You just killed yourself."

    "What?" Thomas asked.

While they were talking, Jade and Newt were having their own conversation.

"Why did you come out here?" Jade asked.

"Because I couldn't sit in the bloody Glade, perfectly safe, knowing that you were risking your life. I couldn't do that. I couldn't sit by and do nothing. I love you," Newt whispered.

Jade hugged him tightly and didn't let him go until Minho tapped her shoulder.

"We need to leave," he said urgently. "The Maze is already changing."

"We can't leave Alby," Jade reasoned. "Let's get him somewhere safe."

"Where?" Newt asked. "There's nowhere safe."

Jade rolled her eyes and pointed to the vines on the wall.

"We can tie him to the vines and get him as high up as we can," she suggested. "I'll let you three do that while I keep an eye out for Grievers."

So the boys began to work, quickly pulling Alby up ten, twenty, thirty, forty feet high. When they finally tied off the vine, full darkness had crept up on them. Jade motioned for them to follow her silently, which they did. They didn't question her.

They turned a corner and saw a wall shifting. On the other side, was a Griever. Jade froze, motioning for the boys to remain silent, no matter what. She slowly backed up and hid in the ivy, the boys following her lead. Not a moment later, the Griever began to walk down the corridor, passing them by. Once they were sure the Griever was gone, they made their way out of the ivy and started to walk. When Thomas looked down, his shoe covered in a strange goo, Jade knew they were exposed.

"RUN!" Jade yelled, taking off down the corridor.

The boys didn't hesitate. If she was running, then a Griever was nearby. They heard the enraged shriek of a Griever and a thud, which indicated that the Griever had been above them, ready to pounce. They followed Jade through the Maze as she navigated her way flawlessly through the Maze. She glanced back and saw that Newt was the last in line.

"Minho, take the lead!" Jade yelled.

She slowed her pace as Minho raced by her, taking up the lead. Jade dropped back to run alongside Newt. In her hand, her gun was ready. She suddenly stopped and turned around, gun up. She shot twice before running again, in another direction. The Griever, aggravated, chased after her, ignoring the three boys.

Newt paled as he put pressure on his injured ankle. He hissed in pain, drawing the attention of the two other boys. Minho put a hand on his shoulder.

    "What's wrong?" Minho asked quietly.

"My ankle," Newt said through gritted teeth, his hand going to his ankle.

Minho and Thomas looked at each other in fear. If Newt couldn't run, they would have to leave him behind. And they couldn't do that to their friend.

"You two, run. Don't look back. I'll be alright," Newt managed to get out.

"No way," Minho argued. "We don't abandon friends."

Newt was about to speak when a shriek cut him off. A Griever. But after that shriek came a scream. A human scream. And there was only one person who could've made that scream.

    Jade.
