Chapter - 1The Night it ended
July 5, 1761
The moon is high with the sound of yells and snapping limbs filling the air. They are after me, they know the truth, they are going to kill me, I can't escape for they are all around me. I could fight back; I could kill them all, be the monster they think I am. But I can't.
I have no reason to go on. I was betrayed and have lost everything. Why did I bother running? Perhaps I felt I could escape the pain, but now that I see those that bare torches and chains. It's seems that the only way to remove the fear and the pain was to accept their judgment of my malediction.
When they finally overtake me, they waste no time binding me. The ropes they used were thin a contrast to the chains that came soon after. They are cold and pinch into my skin with every movement. My cappers are less than gentle as they pull at my hair and throw me around to needlessly hit the ground. I fain resistance, protest to every involuntary movements they force me to do. If I really tried there’s no way they could throw me around like they are but the constant jolt help keep my mind empty.
Soon I’m being dragged behind them. I've lost track of when the grass and trees turned to stone. The Chains that hold me are now strung to the wall. The faint voice of the town preacher denounces me to being an unholy abomination in the eyes of the lord. Light becomes less visible as several men stack up a new wall between them and me. Soon the light is gone, followed by the muffled voices.
Time becomes still, interrupted by the rare clang of the chains. Sleep comes and goes, sometimes met with the slight dampness on my cheeks but that soon ends. Days pass maybe weeks, I don't know. The thirst and hunger that drove me into raved fits is long gone. The more I tried to get out of my chains the more it drained me, it hurts at first but then my senses sway, then the surrounding darkness glowed in a new light. Peace overcomes me as my breathing becomes shallow. As it slows I feel at peace. A smile overcomes my face as I die.
Chapter - 2
A Lesson in sleep
Present Day
Slam! I jolt awake looking around seeing several people snickering at my blunder but they don't bother me as much as the professor looming over me with a less than pleased look on his face does.
"Having a good nap?" He asks.
"Uh, if I say I wasn't asleep would you believe me?"
"No." he said flatly.
"I didn't think so." I hang my head trying my best to look remorseful. This is very hard to do after going through twenty hours of studying for several classes. Along with looking over several items from a pre-revolutionary war site that just started excavation. I would say I’m enjoying it all, but the time I need to put into it is really hammering into my other college courses.
"Sigh... You know for one of my best students your quiet the pain in the ass at times." He steps back looking at his watch with an irritable expression on his face.
"Well I guess now’s a good time to skip out early, see you slackers next week. Jack, come see me in the back room." He turns around, leaving his class to wonder off to who knows where.
Watching him walk I start to get my things together before I meet him in the back. I just got done throwing my last textbook into my bag when I feel a hand slap the back of my shoulder.
Looking at the hands owner I’m met with the grinning face of my closest friend Tray. "Teachers pet taking a day off I see."
"Oh please, you know how long I’ve been awake. After all, if you hadn't moved around all my stuff in my house I wouldn't have missed what sleep I do manage."
