A Soldier Comes Home

A friend of mine died in the war in Afghanistan and left behind his wife, who is also my friend.

They gave me your helmet with all of the shrapnel.

They gave me your boots with the soles worn down.

They gave me your gloves with holes in the fingers.

They gave me your uniform, in which you were found.

They gave me a flag as a sign of respect.

They gave me the medal of which you earned.

They gave me the names of some of your friends.

They gave me a letter, of which I burned.

They took from me my husband.

They took from me my half.

They took from me my heart.

They took from me my laugh.

They gave you a job, and you gave them your life.

You gave them a husband, and left them a wife.
