You Look Like Crap

I peeked through the small window on the door. "Foot is in a cast." I spoke into the phone. "Looks like gauze around his chest and one of those things around his head."

"I'll be there shortly." Bryan said. "Hang in here Alix."

"See ya." I hung up and took a deep breath.

"He's heavily sedated and we aren't quite sure how awake he is." A male nurse told us. "He has a morphine drip that can only be used once every ten minutes and only five items an hour."

"Thanks." I sighed. Slowly I opened the door and tapped on the doorframe. "You up Kev?" I asked.

He groaned something as Manny Evan and myself walked in. He looked worse than he had from he window. Below his nose his entire mouth and jaw was swollen. He was shirtless and on his left side the gauze was stained red with blood. Here was a thin blanket draped over his waist to just below his knee. His foot was elevated slightly off the bed.

"You look like crap." Evan forced a laugh.

Kevin rolled his head to face us and his eyes held a look of pain and anger. He lifted his right hand and slowly curled his pointer finger. Evan stepped closer and as soon as his face was within reach he hit him, softly, but it was still funny.

"Ass." Evan laughed as he backed up.

"Keep drinking." The nurse was back. "Make sure he drinks this." He held up a bottle with a rubber straw at the end. "This is to sick out the excess water." He placed a dentist like tool on the side of Kevin's bed. "Open." He told Kevin as he held he bottle to his lips. I watched as he practically forced Kevin to drink. "Swallow." Once that was over with the nurse placed a humidifier like mask on Kevin chest. "Keep breathing too." He took a glance at the morphone machine. "Press this when you need it. What's your pain at?"

Kevin gave him a glare.

"I'll take that as bad." He chuckled a bit. "Make sure to sleep when you need to." And with that he was out.

I leaned closer to Kevin and looked closely at his slightly open mouth. "Are those braces?" I exclaimed.

Kevin held up his middle finger to me.

"Dude you have braces?" Manny laughed.

Kevin shot him a glare. Sure enough his jaw was wired shut, and braces ran along his teeth.

I gently placed the bear on the table beside him and he reached his arm out to it. "It's just something I saw." I said as I handed it to him.

He did what I can only assume was a smile, the edges of his lips curled up ever so slightly. It was followed by a grimice as he repeativly pressed the morphine button.

"It won't work for another ten minutes." I told him.

He groaned.

"Want the TV on?" Evan asked.

He groaned again and we took it as a yes. The channels here were different from what they were in California and we flicked through them until we found a carton show with a bird and a raccoon? Kevin grunted when Evan stopped at it.

"Want this on?" Evan asked. He grunted in response.

"He looks like hell." Manny whispered to me.

I shrugged. I agreed, Kevin looked broken beyond repair, but I didn't want to admit it.

Kevin grunted and pointed to the phone in Mannys hand.

"What?" Manny asked.

Kevin pointed to himself and then to the phone.

"Want me to take a picture?" He asked.

Mmhmm Kevin mumbled.

Manny stood at the foot of the hospital bed and held up his phone to take a picture. When he was finished he turned it around to show Kevin.

Kevin groaned in dissatisfaction.

"You don't look so good man." Evan laughed.

Kevin held up his right hand and did a motion similar to texting.

"Want me to tweet it?" Manny asked.

Mmhmm.

"You asked for it." Manny said before focusing on his phone.

"Can you move your left arm?" I asked after noticing that he kept it to his side.

He lifted it up from below the elbow and shook his hand sideways.

"Sorta?"

Mmhmm.

"What about above your elbow?"

He put his thumb facing downwards.

"No?" I sighed. "You're hurt bad man."

He groaned and before I could say anything there was vomit seeping from his mouth.

"Gross!" Evan turned away and Manny gaged.

I pressed the call nurse button as I held a pink oval bowl below his mouth. His nose too was bleeding.

"Stay calm." The nurse told him and us as he lifted Kevin up so the vomit could drip down onto it. "This is perfectly normal after surgery." He motioned for me to hold Kevin up. I placed my hand on his back while the nurse messed with the tubes that were in Kevin's arm. "I'll give you medication that will calm the nausea but it will make your heart flutter occasionally." When he was through he grabbed a towel and wiped the blood and excess vomit from Kevin's face. "Let him down." He told me and I gently placed Kevin back to his propped laying position.

"Thanks." I told the nurse as he left. "You okay?"

He groaned.

"Let him sleep." Evan patted my back.

"Ya." I agreed.

"We all need food." He added.

"There's a cafeteria downstairs." Manny chimed in.

"Get some sleep Kev, we'll be back soon."

Mmhmm.

I texted Bryan to meet us by the cafeteria and headed downstairs.
