Charlotte, a labeled misfit, secretly loves to hang out with the elderly. So when she flunks another test, her parents force her to spend quality time her grandpa – something Charlotte doesn’t mind in the least.
At her grandpa's retirement home, she stumbles upon the cocky Maverick Gates, a closeted chess prodigy and boy who can frustrate her without uttering a word. She soon discovers Maverick acts differently around old people, proving to be something more than just the school's mute rebel.
The two instantly clash, resulting in never ending chess games and countless arguments. However, Maverick and Charlotte are forced to work at the hip when someone begins to vandalize the retirement home.
