Damian's POV

I stared at the paper work that littered my father's desk. Correction, MY desk. I wasn't even dressed or washed up when my father Alpha Paul handed me the reigns. I don't blame him really, being without your mate and running a pack for so long takes it toll on you physically and spiritually. Still, he could have let me some fun on my birthday before dumping the work on me.
Its not everyday you turn 18 after all, especially when your an Alpha werewolf. Today marks the first day of my search for the one girl for me. For my soulmate I will search every pack and no matter who or what she is I will love her. Now... time to tackle these stupid pack papers, its probably just the usual small things like looking over our businesses and approving miscellaneous requests.
"ALPHA! We've got a bad situation out here!" I'm snapped out of my thoughts by my Beta Jason's mindlink. I'm already heading out the office when I respond, hearing a vicious fight in the near distance.
"What is it Jason? Rogues, rival pack, hunters?"
"Hunters and rogues working together, not even a quarter of a mile from our front door. They came out of nowhere, we didn't smell or hear them until the first shot hit. We've already lost Jose and Hayden but they took quite a few rogues with them." I cursed under my breath, ripping through my house to the front door.
In the distance I could see the battle, the bullets flying and the wolves grappling. I growled in anger at their arrogance at attacking my pack, I'm going to rip all the attackers apart. Wasting no more time I charged towards the chaos.
"Mate! I smell Mate! She's here! Find Mate!" Max went crazy when we reached the grounds and the smell of cherries and strawberries filled our senses. I was all over now, unable to concentrate on the battle when my soulmate was so close. My eyes scanned the battlefield as i doged each attack that came my away until they locked with hers. She held a pump shotgun in one hand and silver bullets in her other.
I saw the look of disbelief in her eyes as she processed what she was feeling. I felt her accept it and my heart leapt from my chest when the sweetest smile spread across her beautiful face. I felt my own smile reach my ears as I ran over to her, kissing her soft lips. "I've waited for this moment my whole life" I whispered, the battle forgotten to both of us. She laughed, "Who knew I would be a werewolf's mate, and an Alpha's at that." I went to kiss her again when I heard a gun load.
We looked up to see a man who looked a lot like my mate pointing a sawed off shotgun at both of us. Guess shotguns must run in the family. "I should have known you'd be just like your whore of a mother." He sneered and spit. I growled and pushed my mate behind me.
"Don't you dare talk to her like that." I felt her step out from behind me, she gave me a small smile before turning to the man. "Look daddy, I'm sorry mom left you, but I won't let you hurt him. Leave now, call off the attack and maybe we can still repair this before its too late" the man, who I now knew to be her father just laughed and pulled the trigger, pointing the gun to her heart.
"NO!" I felt Max take full control and rip her father to shreds in the blink of an eye. When nothing was left of the bastard Max handed control back to me. I shifted back to my human form and knelt shaking at her side. There was so much of her blood soaking into the dirt and she was barely holding on. I grasped her hand tightly, my heart in my throat and my vision blurry. "Please, you can't go. I just found you baby. Please don't die, I don't... I don't even know your name." She smiled weakly and chuckled. She softy stroked my cheek with her free hand. "It's Maddie, I'm sorry Alpha Damian. I wish we could have met under different circumstances."
I bent my head down for a soft kiss, not wanting to pull away already knowing from the ripping in my heart that my Maddie was gone. I shifted to my large gold wolf and let loose a howl. Everyone who heard it knew what it meant, even the humans. The rogues left, having enough respect at least for the loss of an Alpha's mate to stop the battle. The humans were quickly captured or killed by my warriors. I sat at her side, my soul in pieces and my paws soaking in her blood. I will never love again.
