Monday - The Day

I hear a knock on the door while I'm sitting in the living room playing on my iPad. Today is the first day of middle school.

"Annie? Ya there?" The voice behind the door shouts. I recognize that voice anywhere. It's my best friend, Lillie. She lives a few houses away from me so we hang out a lot. I wasn't really expecting her, but she's welcome anytime. I open the door and the first thing I see is her bright blue shirt with a giant white cat on the front that I got her for her birthday.

"Hey, Lillie! Come in." I say. She walks in and takes a seat.

"My mom said I could come over here scents she's leaving early for work." She says. "Do you mind taking me to school?"

"Not at all. I'm glad you came, I'm so nervous for school."

"Me too. I can't believe it's time."

Just then, my mom walks in with a camera. She takes a picture of me every year on the first day of school, I don't get what's so important but I just go with it. "Are you ready, Ann? Oh, hello Lillie! Nice to see you again. Are you coming with us?" She says.

"Yes please... Well if it's okay." Lillie replies.

"It's fine, hon. Now picture time!" My mom exclaims.

Scents I already know the drill, I pose with Lillie in front of the wall. After we take the picture, we go to to the car.

Once we're at school we spot Sarah in the carpool lane and yell her name out the window. She immediately turns around and waves back. She then stands there and waits for us to get out of the car. When we do get out of our car my mom stops me and gives a big pink kiss on my forehead. Lillie giggles and my face turns red with embarrassment.

"Okay, mom. I get it. Bye."

"Bye, hon!" My mom says as she's getting in the car.

Lillie and I then run to Sarah. We're the only three from our elementary school that got into this tiny middle school. It was just a lottery type thing but we were the lucky ones.

Once we got inside, the bell rang so we went to our home rooms. Sara and Lillie were in Jennifer's class (we call our teachers by first name) and I was in Dean's class.

"See ya guys in history." I said. They waved back and walked to there class together.

The rest of the day was fine, the teachers just talked about what we were going to do for the year and showed us their classroom. But lunch was the weird part. The school didn't have a cafeteria so we ate with our home room. Scents Lillie and Sarah were in a different home room, I was alone with no one I knew except a few people I talked to at my table before actual class started so I just sat with them. It was kinda awkward because they did all the talking and they kept asking me questions and I didn't say much. Now I think I shouldn't have been so shy, they might have thought I was weird with the answers I gave.

When class ends, my mom comes to pick up Lillie and I in the carpool lane.

"How was school, girls?" My mom asked.

"It was cool." We both said together. We didn't want to share any details with my mom because she would talk about it later and embarrass us.

When my mom and I dropped off Lillie and came home, my dad was there cooking spaghetti. Yum, my favorite!

My dad turned around to me. "How was school, pumpkin?" He asked.

"It was fine. It wasn't too bad." I reply.

"Good. Now dinner will ready in about ten minutes." Then my mom and I walk to our rooms.

I can't believe it's the first week of school and my 12th birthday is this weekend. I think to myself. Last year, school started two weeks later than this weird middle school, so my birthday was in summer break. Why can't we just all start on then? Also, I don't have anything planned for tho weekend yet. I've been so caught up in school that I totally forgot to talk to mom about it. This is why I want my birthday to always be in the summer.

Once it's time for dinner, I come downstairs to the delicious smell of my dad's spaghetti and sit down. While we're eating, we talk about what I'm going to be doing for my birthday party, who I'm inviting, where we're going to be, you know, all the stuff like that.

When I get to bed, I can't stop thinking about middle school. I can't imagine what my life will be like with all that homework and all the projects to do. I won't be able to hang out with my best friends much especially my old friends from 5th grade. Then I eventually fall asleep.
