The broken mirror

I don't understand why my best friend, Annalissa, is so excited to be going to my grandparent's house for two weeks. They're old and delusional. I say they're delusional because they tell me not to go in the basement at 12:00 a.m. and look into the old broken mirror that has been down there for centuries. Why don't they just get rid of it if it bothers them that bad? What's the point of keeping  a dumb broken mirror anyways? The only thing I look forward to is swimming whenever I want to anyways so I don't really need to think about that stupid mirror. Let's just hope they don't say something about it to Annalissa. If they do she'd take me down to the basement with her.

Annalissa and I are on our way to my grandparents house now. She's been staring out the window for at least 5 minutes straight. SMACK!  "Ouch! You jerk I was sleeping!" Annalissa yells at me before hitting me in the stomach like I did to her. "Sleeping? With your eyes wide open?" I ask her while laughing at her. "Yes, what do you think I did at school?" She replies. I just laugh at her and look out the window. We're right down the road from my grandparent's house now. They called me earlier and told me that they might not be there. We pull into the driveway and pay the taxi driver.

There's a note on the door that reads; "KEY IS UNDER WELCOME MAT". I pick up the key and unlock the door. We walk inside and go into the living room to see another note that reads; "Hey girls! Sorry we weren't home to say hi, we'll be back later tonight. If we aren't back before 12:00 a.m. we want you guys to know not to go in the basement around that broken mirror at that time. We don't want you to get hurt by what could happen. The room you guys are staying in is upstairs and it will be the third door to your left, your mother's old room. We love you girls! Have fun and stay out of trouble. -GP & GM" I gave the note to Annalissa so she could read it, hoping she wouldn't ask about the broken mirror. Sure enough, her first question was, "Why can't we look in the broken mirror at 12:00 a.m.?"  I glared at her slightly then said "I don't know, but I don't plan on finding out so don't get any ideas, Okay?" She looked at me and nodded as if to say okay back to me.

After a while Annalissa and I got tired. It was around 12:00 a.m. "Hey, Tara, can we go in the basement at 12? Please I want to know what happens." Annalissa begged me. She kept asking and asking to go to the basement. After a while I finally gave in and went down in the basement with her. It was 11:55 p.m. now. I've never really been in my grandparent's basement. It made the whole house feel old just by the way it looked. There was chipped paint everywhere, cracks all over the walls, and what looked like deep scratches in the wall by some animal that was locked down here. I examined the basement more. There was even dry blood on the wall. What made it even more creepy was it was above the mirror. The broken mirror that we were told to stay away from. "I don't feel right, Liss," I said to Annalissa while backing away towards the stairs, "I think we should just go back upstairs," I say in a calm unsure voice. "Nonsense, what could possibly happen? A ghost dog attacking me?" She said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes and said "Well I'm going back upstairs. If something happens don't be blaming me for it," "I won't just go if you're scared, you wuss," she said in a snappy tone. I walk back upstairs and go on my phone. It is now 12:00 a.m. and I heard a scream from the basement. I'm to scared to stand up so I quickly call my grandparents and tell them what is going on. They rushed home and asked me if I was okay. I couldn't get over what had just happened. My best friend just got killed by the beast downstairs.

It's the third day I've been with my grandparent's. I haven't slept since that night when Annalissa got killed. I woke up yesterday to go in the basement and saw her body there on the ground. Her neck was slit and her heart was ripped out, laying next to her still beating. My grandparents should have never mentioned that horrific mirror. It's there fault that my only best friend is dead. I kept thinking about her lifeless body. I couldn't stop thinking about it, I was so upset. "Tara, I know you're upset, but you haven't ate for 2 days," my grandmother said in her sweet old voice. "I lost my appetite after watching what happened to Liss," I replied. Tears started to form in my eyes. I miss my best friend so much. I wish I would've just pulled her upstairs before 12:00 a.m. My grandmother sat next to me and comforted me. "How many times has this happened?" I asked. "How many times has what happened?" My grandmother asks. "How many times have people been killed down there?" I ask being more clear this time. "There has probably been more than 20 people murdered here in that basement," my grandmother says in a low voice, as if to make sure no one heard her. "Why did that thing down there kill them? Why do you even live in here if something is killing people in your basement?" I ask loudly feeling outraged."I don't know," she says hesitantly. We talk about the house as my grandmother tries to change the subject. Maybe she isn't delusional as I thought.

Lately I've been hearing  voices. They all sound like Annalissa calling me for help or crying. Sometimes I swear I even see her, but she doesn't look the same, she's covered in blood and holding her heart. I'm going insane here. I watched my best friend die and then I think I see and hear her. It's just a phase, I hope. I'll be out of this house in 5 days then go back home and everything will be normal. I notice I haven't talked that much lately. I just couldn't wait to leave this place. CRASH! I heard something fall in the room next to the one I was in. No one else was home so I stood up, dialed my grandparent's number and slowly walked by the door. I heard something in the room. It sounded like a girl crying, actually it sounded exactly like Annalissa! I opened the door to see no one, but the mirror that was in the room was broken. If that wasn't enough to freak someone out, there was words written out in blood on the wall. The bloody note read; "WHY DIDN'T YOU COME HELP ME, TARA?! I NEEDED YOU! I THOUGHT WE WERE BEST FRIENDS!" I was panicking as I ran out of the room and called my grandparents. They were home within five minutes. There was no doubt that Annalissa was haunting this house now.

Three more days until I go home, but that means three more days with my dead best friend. It's really creepy hearing her yell and scream about me not saving her. I couldn't have done anything to help anyways. I sometimes catch myself saying I'm sorry to her, even though she probably can't hear me. "Tara," I hear her voice behind me, "go in the basement with me again, I want to show you what killed me, he's nice after he kills you, I promise." She sounded like she was still alive and I started to cry. I turned around to look at her, she was covered in dry blood, holding her heart in her right hand. She looked like something you would see in a horror movie, she had her light pink sundress on, which was now more of a red in some spots more than others. "I-I can't go, I don't want to die Liss," I replied to her after a minute. "You told me you would die if something bad ever happened to me, you look very alive to me, but look at me," she says looking at herself, "I'm dead and bloody!" She says sounding like she's about to cry. "I'm sorry for what that beast did to you," I say trying to stop crying. "He's not a beast, he's a very nice man, he may be all bloody and his clothes are ripped up, but he's nice," She replies trying to convince me to go. We have the same argument about the basement as before. I start to cry again then I finally say "Okay I'll go with you as long as you don't let him kill me," "Okay, I won't let him touch you,"

It's 11:45 p.m., I really hope that Annalisa told me the truth. Then again, she's a ghost, why would I trust a ghost? Oh yeah, because she's my bestfriend and I should believe her. "What if he doesn't listen to you? What if he kills me anyways?" I ask. I was getting really stressed out. "Just trust me, I promise I won't let him touch you," She replies in a certain voice. I nod and start walking down the stairs. It was now 11:50 p.m. I was shaking like mad. In a few minutes I will see the thing that killed my best friend. I sat in front of the mirror and talked to Annalissa for the minutes until 12:00 a.m.. Out of the mirror crawled a guy, he looked exactly how Annalissa explained him. He had pitch black hair, deep blue eyes, and he was covered in blood and his clothes were torn to shreds. He didn't touch me but he gave Annalissa a knife. "Liss, no don't do this to me!" I yelled at her. "I said he wouldn't hurt you, I never said I wouldn't," she said with a depressed serious face "You left me to die while you went back upstairs! Now it's your turn. Lights out, Tara," She says before killing me. Before I knew it I was standing up, staring at my dead body. Annalissa stares at my dead body and smiles, "I'm sorry, at least we'll be best friends forever now. Forever."
