Chapter One.
================
River played with a strand of her waist long, dark green hair as she watched her baby Deino waddle around her feet, chirping happily. Every so often, he would try to bite River’s shoe when he bumped into it; a small whistle she had taught him to obey immediately stopped the child from causing any damage.
“Deino, baby, don’t do that,” she spoke softly, picking him up. He started in surprise and tried to bite her hand, before realizing who she was. He returned to chomping at the air in front of him.
River stood from her seat and slowly walked to the nearest window, looking out at the snowy beach of Snowpoint. The boat she was waiting for was late; it was supposed to take her to Unova, with a bunch of other trainers. Through the flurry snow that constantly fell, she peered at the dock, not a boat in sight.
“Damn,” she muttered, her breath fogging up the glass. “I don’t need to be wastin’ precious minutes of my life waitin’ for some lowlife that drives boat… I could’ve driven my own!”
She sighed in annoyance and turned away from the window, abruptly running straight into another person.
Deino was still chomping the air; once he found the nearest sleeve, he latched on and tried to eat it. “Shi—” the person hissed, trying to back away from the baby. Deino, thinking this was prey, growled and jerked his head back.
River whistled shrilly. Deino let go immediately. She hissed underneath her breath, unclasped a Pokeball from her belt, and sucked her Pokemon into it with a flash of red light. Clipping it back onto her belt, River knelt next to the unfortunate person.
“Did he bite through the sleeve?” she asked, concerned.
“N-no,” the person murmured.
River took a minute to fully examine the newcomer. Their gender wasn’t the easiest to guess with their pulled-back long jet-black hair and boyish clothes; she decided on female after a moment. She had her black hair in a ponytail with long bangs covering her left eye and small chips holding back hair on her right side. Her long-sleeved blue and orange shirt had a small black vest with orange trimming around the edges; her baggy capris were black with a small trim of orange as well, matching well with her red converse.
“Sorry for Deino’s trouble; he’s just a child and doesn’t know boundaries yet,” River tried to explain, “Most Deinos are like that, though. They always bite because they’re blind and don’t know their surroundings.” She hesitated before standing, holding out a hand to help the girl up. “I’m River.”
The girl ignored River’s hand and pushed herself up with her hands. “Riley,” she said, her voice slightly deep and soft, taking River’s still-outstretched hand. “And I’m a guy.”
River blinked at shock, then smiled apologetically. “O-oh, right, sorry, Riley,” she stuttered, touching her Pokeballs out of a nervous habit.
The girl—no, boy—chuckled quietly. “It’s fine. A lot of people mistake me for a girl, but I don’t mind, really.”
River still felt awkward underneath Riley’s blue gaze, considering he was much taller than her and that she had thought him to be a girl. She smiled shyly and dropped her hazel eyes to her feet. “Sorry,” she murmured.
“Rio!”
River and Riley looked over at the sound of a Pokemon. A Lucario had spoken as he walked over to them. River shot a questioning look at Riley.
