At the age of 3 Clara, her mother, and her father went on a road trip to see her grandmother, a very wealthy and lovable old woman. By night of the second day; as her parents were deciding where to stay the night, a drunk driver came around the corner going too fast and slammed right into the family of three. As the car flipped over and rolled over the sleeping toddler was jolted awake from the sound and recoil from the crash. Her grey eyes looked over at the bloody forms of her parents.
As she cried for her mommy and daddy to wake up a cop who drove by only to see the crash had quickly gotten out of his patrol car and raced over to the now mostly crushed metal form that used to be a car. Prying open the door in the back behind the driver’s side the officer unbuckled the crying toddler from the harness of her car seat. As he brought the small child to his squad car setting her down is the passenger’s seat he called in the crash to headquarters.
As the night rode by into the morning, Clara’s grandmother Marian had come to get her whimpering granddaughter from the hospital, Clara had suffered only a couple of scratches. It was decided later that Clarissa would be living with her grandmother from then on. At five years old Clara had the manners of a grown woman; by the age of six, Marian had taught Clara how to draw and paint; at eight she was dancing; and nine Clara could play a few instruments and sing. At the age of ten the young girl was blossoming into a lovely, proper lady. Being so young during the car crash, Clara had few memories of her mother and father, but she still had the nightmares from the crash that consisted of the sound and the blood covered figures of her parents.
As the years went by Grandmother Marian had told Clara that she would be the heiress to the mansion and all of Marian’s money. Always saying that her remaining son would only waste the money on drugs and ruin the mansion and bring more shame to the name Cooper than there already was. At the age of eleven, Clara had started middle school and was having a wonderful time learning with a bunch of other kids than by herself and with her grandmother like it was before.
Life was changing for the young girl and she was no longer having nightmares of the crash. Clara had friends over for a sleepover once and was really excited for a night full of games and fun, until one of the girls found out that Grandmother Marian would be out of town and called over more than the five girls who were originally there and started a massive party with boys, and alcohol. Thinking things couldn’t get worse there was kissing and things breaking everywhere. A complaint was made to the officers from someone next door and soon the cops were at the door.
After they told everyone to go home and even taking a few in some of the squad cars, the officers called Clara’s grandmother and told her everything. Marian wouldn’t listen to her granddaughter as she tried to explain what had really happened. Once again Clara was being home schooled and tutored. Marian would watch from the window as her beloved granddaughter would swing outside on the big, old oak tree. Clara would watch television when her grandmother wasn’t around about young ladies at the age of sixteen getting pregnant and having children, Clarissa would always scrunch her nose in disgust. Soon she found herself glaring at the woman on the streets when she went out with her grandmother.
