It was finally the annoying tones of her alarm clock which woke Juliet from her deep sleep along with a pounding headache. A couple minutes later, after a splash of water from the tap, she slung her raven black hair into a ponytail. Today, she left her light green eyes alone, preferring not to show off the gold flecks which shone clearly.
She sprinted downstairs, slipping a backpack onto a shoulder. As usual, her mother Eris waited at the dining room table, barely containing her impatience at her adopted daughter. "Where have you been? The bus is about to leave, and I can't drive you to school today."
Juli rolled her eyes and grabbed a bagel, and as she ran out the door yelled a quick "Love you too!" back towards her mother.

She had barely made it on the bus, sliding into her regular seat next to her best friend Travis, before discovering this time, he was accompanied by his older brother, Xavier.
Travis was in Juli's class, a junior with dark shaggy hair, light skin, and hazel eyes. She had met him when they were both around four, right when she had arrived in town. They were neighbors, and when his mother came to welcome him to town, "Trav" had accompanied her with a welcome and a declaration of a newfound friendship.
Xavier on the other hand was more aloof around the pair. He had dark chocolate brown eyes, black hair, and skin a few shades darker than his younger brother. He usually kept to himself when his brother was around, but Juliet caught him trying to flirt with most of the girls at their small school. He wasn't around most of the times when she was able to meet up with Travis, which was perfectly fine with her.
Xavier started humming behind the two, causing Juliet to pull her hockey cap down lower towards her eyes in annoyance.
This continued until the bus finally pulled to a stop, causing Juli to cast a glance up at her friends glare towards his brother before he broke it off.
"C'mon, Juli." Travis insisted, leading their path away from Xavier's smug smile.

At the end of the day, Juliet was disappointed to find out her headache had still not disappeared and she had the bad luck to run into Riley. The nerd had it in for her since she had beat him in both the PSAT prep and PSAT which all of the juniors had taken earlier in the school year.
She didn't know why it came easy to her, but after paying attention in class and barely studying, she received a higher score than the smartest in the class.
Riley was the type who was perfect at everything. A straight A kid who was on every sport team one could think up, and no one dared to mess with him. Many of the students in their grade played dumb in order to stay on his good side.
"You made a fool out of me." He had muttered the day before after they had seen the scores. "No one humiliates me like that and gets away with it."
The threat was a ticking time bomb for the past twenty-four hours, finally exploding in her arms when he issued a challenge to her in order to mend his hurt pride.
Travis tried to discourage her from meeting with Riley, but to no avail. She was determined to prove she wasn't the frail Juliet most thought she was.
Juliet waited behind the school, knowing her message of acceptance had been relayed to the boy through his assorted "agents" throughout the school. Typically, she flew under the radar. She had a friend, Travis, but otherwise, she went unnoticed by the other students and pictures. Many people showed up to the fight because of this fact.
She saw his sandy-blonde mop of hair first before her suspicions were confirmed by the 5'8" height, pale skin, and light grey eyes. They were exactly the same height, so before he started throwing around comments, she made eye contact with a steady, confident gaze.
Suddenly, the look in his eyes changed slightly, looking less overconfident and more sure of himself. The look told her this fight wasn't going to end up in her favor, before she felt a spike appear out of no where, slamming into her stomach.
She coughed as her vision of Riley seemed to change. Juliet crumpled to the ground. Her mind seeming to clear, forming a plan to defeat the (beast). The burning in her stomach seemed to get worse as she made a quick decision about what to do.
She slammed her palm into the ground, watching with fear and surprise as a long crack appeared in the ground under Riley's feet. Fire licked at his shoes, causing him to stumble back with a yelp of fright and run away from the strange event.
Juliet's palm detached from the ground as the fissure closed. Almost immediately afterward, she fell backwards, unconscious before she hit the ground.

Travis ran through the murmuring kids and stood facing them as Xavier checked up on Juli. He snapped his fingers, making the air ripple in front of the students. "Juliet never came to this school, and this is due to a construction accident. Now shoo."
He gestured to make his point and watched them walk away drearily before turning and kneeling down beside his brother. "How is she?"
The light shaking of Xavier's hands which helped the (beast)'s spike was all he needed to know his brother had used his power to heal her. Xavier had inherited their ancestor, Asclepius, skill in healing, using it only occasionally due to the stories he had been told.
Travis, on the other hand, was a pyrokinetic. Yes, pyrokinesis was supposed to be reserved for children of Hephaestus, and he still has no idea why he was stuck with the power over fire. He was an almost perfect shot with the bow and arrow, though, while Xavier didn't usually fight. When he did, he usually used his balanced sword, Sunsting (crappy name, but he wasn't in a creative mood when Annabeth told him he should name it.)
Travis knocked the stake aside, kneeling down next to his brother. "C'mon Juliet, just wake up for me, okay?"
