Brianna ended up sitting next to me in five of six classes. Fifth hour, she sat in the seat two in front one row to the right. That put her in the second row, me in the last. She was really nice and got along with the other students well. Especially girls like Ashlee and Nikki.
At lunch, she sat with Nikkita and Ashlee, two tables away from me, her back to me. She had gotten a peanut butter sandwich and a chocolate milk.
"Dude," Frankie snapped his fingers in my face. "Are you paying attention? Did you hear me?"
"No, he was watching the new girl." Rob laughed. "Alex, you don't stand a chance with her." He took a drink of milk, almost choking on it.
"No, I think you're wrong." I said. I looked over at her again. Ashlee was telling her something, grabbed her braid, and looked at the ends. Brianna shook her head.
"I think I'm right." Rob took a bite of the slop on his tray. "She's too pretty."
"I think she's perfect." Frankie cut in. "That's why Alex won't stand a chance." They laughed.
I shook my head. "No. You are both wrong. I think I stand a chance. I just have to try to take one first." I looked over at her again. Ashlee said something, and pointed at me. I turned my head to face Rob so they couldn't tell I had been watching them. "Besides, you guys don't even really know her."
"Do you?" Rob asked. I blushed, because he had a point.
"Not really, but I have a plan." I took a bite of the salad I had made.
"Anyway," Frankie said, dragging three syllables into six. "New video. What do you think?"
"What song?"
"We can find one."
"How bout Sunday? I should be free."
"A'ight. We'll see." Frankie got up and threw away his tray. I did the same.
I wanted to talk to Brianna, but I knew it would have to wait until next hour, or even until school ended. The bell for the end of lunch rang then, causing all the kids to jump from their seats and walk to the doors. Perfect, I thought, Just what I needed.
I walked out of the lunch room to my locker and pulled out my health books for fifth hour. It was one of my least favorite classes, other than sixth hour English. Only because of the teachers. They were boring as shit.
"Hey," Brianna's voice said from behind me. She touched my shoulder.
"Hi," I said. I turned to face her and smiled.
She smiled back. "Do you want to hang out after school? Do our homework or something?"
"Sure," I answered.
"Oh, I almost forgot." She pulled a square of paper out of her pocket.
"What's that?"
"My phone number. Sorry I lied about it. I just.... we hadn't known each other long and you asked for it. So I felt a little uncomfortable about giving it to you."
"So why are you giving it to me now? We haven't known each other long still."
She looked at me, seriously. "Because I feel like I can trust you. You are really nice."
We started walking towards the health room. I wanted to grab her hand, but I knew we were just friends. "So, homework or something." I smiled, turning to look at her. "Your house or mine?"
"Either would work out. But I'm not sure how my brother would like me letting someone in without running it by him first." She looked at her arm, rubbing her left hand against it.
