|~ Chapter One

(A month later)

~ Mike Hayes ~

'How does tetrodotoxin make you look dead and safety precautions' Mike wrote into google, and clicked onto a few pages to see what they said about the drug. He had been in this debt for a few months and the Loan Shark was starting to call the house phone, and appear at his job and warehouse and other places.

He was a desperate man, looking for a way out.

Mike was losing his mind. Ever since he had broken into the medical centre that his friend worked at to steal painkillers, Maya and Aaron had found out about his addiction, the one that Aaron had been told Mike had quit. Maya and Aaron both made sure that Mike was not getting another painkiller or anything like it. He had been sent to rehab sessions (that did not work, partly because he never showed up).

Mike hated it. He needed those painkillers. He felt weak and it was as if his body was refusing to work without them. Even just typing those few words into google he felt tired. Or maybe that was just because it was at least 2am in the morning. Mike had been getting up early and looking at drugs and other ways to fake his own death so that Sarah could get the money for being a single parent and pay the Loan Shark, and after a few years of him living in Ireland he could return and everyone will have forgotten.

Now you're adrift in the sea of lies

Joe grabbed his phone from beside him, pulling out his headphones he looked at the caller ID... Number Withheld. He immediately knew who it was and answered the phone. He listened to the voice on the other end give him instructions about what he wanted doing.

"WHAT...?!" Joe whisper screamed down the phone as someone might have heard him. The other person laughed at Joe's stupidity and hung up after blackmailing him into agreeing. Joe threw his phone across his room in anger.

WHY?! Why had I gotten myself involved in this? I thought I was doing the right thing at first by helping the pathetic Mike... But now he wants me to do things to Maya.... Things that I don't want to do as I have accepted we cannot be together and I don't want her involved or getting hurt by this.

Joe paced the dark room. He had accepted a month earlier that he and Maya were not getting back together, and, after seeing the hurt in her eyes he didn't try and get her back and saw that she was beginning to trust him a little bit again.

Now... Now that was all going to be lost. All because he had got caught up with him:

Joe studied his watch - 11:14pm - watching the second hand tick slowly round the clock as he waited for Maya to get home from work. Any second now. He knew that she would go straight upstairs into her room and get changed for bed. He waited just behind his bedroom door (as his room was next to hers) to pull her in. Just when he got tired and was going to give up with the plan he heard the key in the front door. Footsteps ran up the wooden stairs. Joe got ready and just when she walked past his door he pounced.
