All I hear is the people around me, chattering about whatever they feel deemed to in their social pleasures. And while I'm stuck in the middle of the social sphere around me, I'm also the most quiet. All of us are crowded against the math room door, anticipating the bell excitedly to leave class. And no matter how hard she tries, our teacher can't yell loud enough to tell my fellow students and I to sit down. I shrug her off as everyone else does, putting my headphones in just to block out some of the blistering loudness. I didn't turn any music on, but sometimes I just put my earbuds in so no one will talk to me. Especially people who aren't my friends. Then, over the chatter of my classmates, I hear the heavenly bell go off, and the door opens, children flooding out from the far too small hole. I tell my teacher to have a good weekend, and then walk out of the room. I was the last one out. And yet even now, I'm still in the ruckus. These hallways aren't much quieter and its rather annoying, but I head down the stairs to meet up with Makenna, my girlfriend, before I go down to my last class of the day. I can't wait for Friday to be over. Getting down the stairs was a bit challenging, many people also heading down and up making it so, but I make it without a blood-spill. I walk down the hallway to my right, going through the D-hallway and turning left to reach what is known as the central area of my school. It was a plaza that withheld both a library and two large corridors which lead to different sides of the very large school. There are at least 2000 students, and it honestly makes me wanna die. Then suddenly, I accidentally step on someones shoe. "I'm sorry." I walk past the guy, who was just another unknown face. "Its fine." He says back as I turn left again, where I look to the right side of the hallway excitedly to find Makenna. And after a few piles of unknown people, I see her talking to her blonde friend that I can never remember the name of, and I'm not even sure if I've ever known her name. She smiles at me as I get close, and then wraps her fingers around my hand. "Hey, Blue." She says to me, bringing her other hand to my arm. Oh... I've never told you my name. Its not Blue, but that is a nickname. My name is Isaiah Shepherd, and I am most known for wearing a lot of blue and being very quiet around people I don't know. Maybe even cold. "Hello, love..." I say back to Makenna, smiling back at her as we turn back the same way I came from to walk her to her class. "Are you okay?" She asks with a concerned face. "Yeah, I'm okay. My classes just haven't been that great." She keeps looking at me the same way, sighing and saying, "Alright..." We continue down the hall past the D-hallway and into the lunch area, where Makenna nuzzles me. I nuzzle her back, smiling and looking into her eyes, her staring back when suddenly, another bell goes off, not nearly as heavenly as the one before. It booms loud and new, Makenna and I never hearing it before. And it seems were not the only two to notice, because everyone all around us were stopping in confusion like us. Suddenly, a voice comes from the intercom. "Attention all students! This is an emergency alert! I repeat, this is an emergency alert! Bunkers beneath the male and female bathrooms have opened up, and all students must enter them NOW!" Suddenly, the intercom is drowned out by panicked shrieks, and it honestly makes me mad. But even Makenna looks worried. Luckily, we were very close to the lunch room bathrooms. "Makenna, follow me!" She nods with worried eyes, and we dart towards the male bathroom. I look into the lunch room once before I head in, seeing a very large plane in the distance, scaring me. I head into the bathroom, seeing a single open panel in the floor with a staircase leading down. "Makenna, go!" "What?" She says very upset, but then I force her into the panels hole and down the stairs. I look back once, seeing an old friend enter the bathroom. "James! Come on!" He nods, following behind me down the dark staircase. He shuts the panel behind us! "What are you doing, James???" "No one is coming. Theres too much panic..." I look at him in shock. "That doesn't mean we leave them to die!" His face goes a little red. "Isaiah, its either them, or us!" Silence. I try to argue back but I feel too much fear. I start to see the light hue from the panels cracks turn from a white to a dark yellow, scaring me. "Alright, lets go!" We both run down the stairs into a basic dark room with a single light, all three of us covering our ears. I see Makenna on the other side of the room, sitting on the floor against the wall. And suddenly, as I reach the bottom step, the world begins to shake... All I can hear is the sound of the world crumbling around our little square and the boom of an explosion that I could only believe to be coming from an Atom Bomb. I fall into the floor getting down the stairs as the earth rumbles, and James falls also, on top of me, crushing my ability to get air. I feel my face flush to the cold, concrete floor as I try my best to get up, James rolling off of my left side and us both laying down with our ears covered. I look on the other side of the vibrating room, and find Makenna also laying on the ground. I guess its the safest way. I then shut my eyes, waiting... Waiting... Waiting... It felt like the next minute came off as a thousand hours, everything being drowned by the total desolation of everything... And eventually, the vibration stopped... "Makenna, are you okay?!" I yell, not opening my eyes or uncovering my ears. And then she yells back, "Yeah! Just a few scratches from the concrete!" I smile. "Good!" I slowly uncover my ears, the hellbent screaming explosion now being some sort of deadly silence for the ones who didn't make it. I then slowly open my eyes, seeing James already on his knees beside me. "How about you, James?" He looks down at me. "I'm okay..." He says coldly, getting up and reaching out a hand to me, which I take. He then pulls me up easily with his bulky build. "Your cheeks bleeding..." He says, I then feeling my cheek to see if its true. "I could be worse. Its just a scratch." I walk to the middle of the room where the light is, James following slowly behind as I check on Makenna. "Can you stand?" She sniffles. "Yeah... I can..." She gets up on her own, just like her usual self. "But... But we need to go back up. Check on peo-" "No." James says again, coldly. "Um... No offense James. But your opinion doesn't matter." Makenna says with a slight anger in her tone. "I meant not right now, calm down. Its too early to be checking on what we don't know is going on. There could be anything up there. Radiation, Shrapnel covering the floors, Zombies." "Nows not really the time to joke, James..." I say, looking at the floor and taking my earbuds out to hang loosely from my blue hoodie. "I wasn't joking. You never know what the radiation could do to them." "Well those "thems" are our friends, James!" Makenna yells in a fit. I hug Makenna, trying to calm her down. "We need time to collect our thoughts right now... We can't just charge outside to face the new world. I'm afraid James is right about that. But once we learn more, we will look for our friends, okay?" I say to Makenna in a comforting tone, trying to lighten things. "I can accept that." James says. "Besides, theres some supplies down here that may be able to help us. Maybe even gas masks." Makenna suddenly loses strength in her legs, almost falling to the floor. She would have if I wasn't holding her. "James... We'll do that in the morning... For now, we should all rest. After all, my right knee feels like hell." "Yeah... And my hip isn't exactly in the best shape either after landing on your spine." James says, turning his body from side to side to test his hips. "Can we sit down?" Makenna asks softly. "Yeah... We can..." I say, sitting down with her against the concrete wall, her head falling onto my shoulder. James then walks over to a stack of canned somethings, and sits on top of it, leaning against the corner of the walls. His eyes shut, and he turns his music on and puts his earbuds in. "Isaiah... I wanna find my friends..." Makenna says, somewhat rushing. "We will, love... Just not right now... Try to sleep some, okay?" She shakes her head no, but after a few minutes of silence fell asleep anyway. And after I start hearing her quiet snores, my eyelids start to grow heavy, and the light in the dark room begins to fade into black...
