I walk up to the ATM and put in my pin, expecting the usual $20 or $50. Instead, hundreds of dollars started spitting out. Shocked, I hurriedly grabbed the bills from the floor and held my backpack out underneath the slot catching more and more hundreds. It finally stops after what felt like forever. I stepped away stuffing all of it away in my backpack before walking home to count my profit.
Let me tell you something special about this ATM. Every day for the past 4 years it has been giving me the exact amount of money I need to survive for that specific day. Not exactly sure why it happens, maybe it has something to do with how I set up my account or my pin? Maybe it's magic, but who cares right? I've never gone home with anything extra or anything less but i'm not complaining! After counting all the money, it summed up to $70,000. What the toot am I supposed to do with $70,000? Why did the ATM give me this much? Is this the ATM's torturous way of telling me it's my last day alive? I thought back to my personal finance class when Professor Emerson was teaching us about debt and explained to us how when you die, any debt will automatically be passed onto your family. Maybe I should save it for my family encase they ever find themselves in adverse conditions. But I've been such a good kid...I feel like I've earned this. I mean it was the ATM that gave it to me so maybe i'll just save them 4%, but hey that's still a whopping $2,800. I decide to go to the bank and deposit the 4% percent in the family share account. Then, I exchanged half of what I had left for twenties so I wouldn't be carrying around a bunch of hundreds and getting myself beat up in an alleyway. The teller warily takes the money and places it in the machine to count it before getting me the correct amount of change in twenties per my request.
"So what do you do for a living?" the teller asks.
"I sell drugs, interested?" I retorted.
The teller looked like he just got punched. Flustered, he answers an inflection clear in his voice "Uh ah pfft um no..."
"Ahhh I mean if you change your mind, my name's Greg!"
He nods his head awkwardly, deflecting back to the machine to grab my money. I thanked him and walked out of the bank. Headed for the crosswalk with a slight spring in my step, whistling to myself I walked up and pressed the button. The moment I did so, the button turned to walk. I smiled and just before I went to place a foot on the street, a red sports car flies past me. I stumbled back and decided to use a different crosswalk further down the street near ASU's mens dormitory. As I wandered down the convoluted halls, I found myself in front of my friend's dorm. Shrugging my shoulders to no one in particular, I knocked on the pale wood. The door opened with a whoosh and my voluble friend, Josh, stood in the doorway swaying slightly as if stuck in a windy courtyard.
"Dude, how drunk are you?" I asked reaching out a hand to steady
"I'm not drunk. I'm tipsy" he said smirking. I sighed.
"Listen bro, you need to stop reverting to your old ways or your parents are going to pull you out!" Josh scoffed and waved me in, stumbling slightly over some of the messy clothes strewn across the floor. So far, Josh has been the most inflexable person I have ever met. How he got into college? I have no idea, but he's pretty chill so I hang out with him anyways.
"Hey, want to go partying tonight?" He shook his head sadly.
"Nah bro, I'm broke." I waved it off.
"Dude I'll pay for everything. Come on, It'll be fun" I grinned, a hand ond on my backpack ready to show him the money I had.
"Dude no I'm not going to extort money" I frowned
"Do you even know what extort means?" I asked, but he was no longer listening. He was now laying on the bed, playing a game on his phone. I threw my hands in the air and walked towards the bed.
"Look, I'm inviting you to party. I mean seriously, all year you've been trying to subvert my studies with parties so get off your lazy butt and come with me," I almost yelled.
"Alright alright. I guess you have evolved from the small anxious freshman you were before. I'm gonna take full credit by the way." I rolled my eyes and motioned to the door. Josh followed soon after.
We made our way down through the courtyard and to the street and pressed the button. As we stood there waiting, Josh got distracted by a pretty girl a little ways down the street. I watched him walk up to her and rolled my eyes. Then, as i turned my head back to the stop sign across the street, I saw a red sports car headed right at me. My eyes widened in fear and I started to move. And then, there was pain and darkness.
Suddenly I felt weightless and I realized my eyes were screwed shut. I slowly opened them and looked around. I was in a black void, no end or beginning to be seen.
"You used it wrong." I spun around as best I could while floating so it probably looked more like a awkward synchronized swimming move then a simple spin. When I finally got around, I saw a tall girl with pale blonde hair pale almost alabaster skin and completely black eyes that looked like holes in her head against the black of the void.
"What?"
"The money, you used it wrong," I Looked at her confused. "It was for an emergency organ transplant while you were on the class trip to the Grand Canyon. Your liver has just barely been holding on, it would have failed at 1:43 pm but since you started the day by using the money wrong you died early."
"Can I ask you something?" she nodded "Why me? Why did the ATM choose me?"
"It's not a matter of it choosing you. Everyone has something they are given at the start of each day since birth to help them survive. However, for some strange reason, you didn't get one so we gave you one."
"We? Who is 'we'?" She smirked and snapped her fingers and I found myself alone in the void just floating, and that's where I've been for the past eternity. Just floating.
Floating.
Floating.
Forever.
