Suga and Keun-suk sat silently in the restaurant that they had agreed upon. Suga’s was stiff with anger. He was quietly telling himself to hold it together. Keun-suk was gripping his glass of tea as he stared at the handphone that was currently ringing on the table. His eyes moved between the obnoxious thing and its owner. Seemed to him like either Suga was ignoring the loud thing or he for some reason hasn’t heard the continuous ringtone blaring. “You not going to answer that?” He asked Suga, who just stared straight ahead and refused to speak. “It could be Lonna.”
Getting fed up pf him talking and the music playing over and over, Suga reached for the phone and turned the volume all the way down before slamming it back on the surface of the table. Hearing Keun-suk laugh beside him, he could feel the frustration come over him again. “You really hate me.”
Suga rolled his eyes and looked at him for the first time. “Your very astute on that subject, I’ll grant you that much.”
“If you dislike me so much, why did you accept my invitation?” Keun-suk questioned.
“You asked me here to tell me something. Please go ahead.” Suga said ignoring the question he had asked.
“Okay.” Keun-suk’s expression turned serious as he stared back at Suga. “I like your directness. But do you know, what you think of as being direct, sometimes only hurts the people around you?” There was an angry tone to his voice.
Suga was pissed that he dared to show any kind of anger. To see that he was only made him want to leave. “I’m not wasting my time listening to bullshit.” Suga quickly stood and grabbed the bag that sat on the seat beside him.
“Listen up.” Keun-suk stopped him before he could get far from the table, but again Suga refused to face him. “I care about Lonna, as my mentor’s daughter.” Suga turned and gave him a suspicious glare., but Keun-suk’s sad expression didn’t change the longer he watched him. “Teacher taught me many things…what it is to be a person, the value of life.” As he spoke, his mind started to drift to the last day he ever saw Lonna’s father.
Keun-suk walked slowly beside Lonna’s dad as he turned the record he held in his hands around over and over. “Teacher.” He turned slightly to face him as they continued to walk. “Thank you for writing the recommendation for me.”
Lonna’s father leaned his head back as he chuckled. “It was nothing. You’re my best student.” His compliment made Keun-suk smile. “When you’re in the U.S., remember to take care of yourself, understand?”
“Yes. I understand.” He answered. He watched as Lonna’s father admired the record he held. “Teacher?”
“Hm?” He hummed.
Keun-suk pointed at the object in his hands. “I know that record. Lonna said it’s your favorite.”
His teacher laughed as he looked at the track list on the back. “My old one, that kid Lonna scratched it.” Keun-suk chuckled at how much that sounded like something Lonna would do. The vision of how she might have cried when it happened came to mind. “The tail end is distorted. So I bought a new one.”
“Teacher? Is one of those songs your and Pamela’s love song?” He asked out of curiosity.
“Because this album was played at the ball, I was able to steal her heart.” He answered giving Keun-suk a small wink. “When the kid heard the story, she wanted the record. Since it’s her birthday soon, I’m buying her a new one.”
“That’s right. Lonna’s birthday is coming up. I can still remember last years birthday. But this year…” A frown came to his lips. “I’ll probably be in the U.S.”
Lonna’s father laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. “No problem. At her graduation ceremony, come back to dance with her.”
His demand took Keun-suk by surprise. “Teacher…”
“Lonna is young, but when she grows up, I hope she will be with a trustworthy person like you.” Keun-suk found himself at a loss for words. “To me, nothing is more important than Pamela and Lonna’s happiness. I’ll be responsible for Pamela. But what about Lonna?” Her father raised his eyebrow in Keun-suk’s direction. He gave him a warm smile before walking ahead of him.
You could hear a pin drop as Suga stood and listened to Keun-suk’s story. “He was saving a little girl who’d run out into the street to get her ball. Seeing the car speeding toward her, he rushed out into the street. There was no warning. He used his own body as a shield for the young child. The car didn’t stop in time. Then he left us.” Suga felt like his heart was breaking. Lonna had never told him what had happened to her father, but in all fairness, he hadn’t really asked. Knowing now, made him feel sadness for both her and her mother. “He’d prayed for his only daughter’s happiness. After all these years, to see Lonna again…I’m really happy. She has become a gentle and compassionate girl. I believe my mentor, would be proud too. But…” He glanced up at Suga. “She’s currently tormented by a difficult love situation.”
Suga stared at him. He felt nothing but anger and guilt.
Lonna’s POV
“The number you are calling is not reachable at this time.” This seemed like the thousandth time she had heard this same recording.
Seeing the stress, the situation was putting on her daughter, Pamela put her hand gently on Lonna’s knee, hoping it would be a bit of comfort. “Maybe his phone battery died.” To her surprise, Lonna slammed the phone down on the hanger and started making her way to the front door. “Lonna!” She screamed in concern. “It’s late! Where are you going?”
“To look for Yoongi.” She shouted over her shoulder as she rushed to put on her shoes.
“His father will be home soon. Wait till then, and we will drive around and look for him.” Pamela said worrying about Lonna being out at the late hour by herself.
Lonna felt bad about disobeying her mother, but she knew she couldn’t wait any longer. Her heart felt like it would thump out of her chest any minute. Not caring about her mother objecting, she opened the door and ran out. Pamela had never seen her daughter act like this before.
It’s too strange. It’s late. Why hasn’t he called? Lonna thought as she slammed the iron gate open running out of it. Her head turned frantically to each side of the street as she pondered which why she should go. Just as she was about to pick a random side, she saw him coming down the sidewalk towards her. Her heart leapt with happiness as she ran to him. “Where did you go? I have called several times.” She lectured him.
“What is it?” Lonna was confused with how emotionless his voice sounded as he seemed to stare straight through her.
“If you’re going to be late coming home, you should at least call.” Lonna couldn’t stop herself from being a but angry at him. “Mom and I both were worried.”
The emotionless expression turned sad as Suga stared down at the concrete below him. “Just because we’re family?”
“Huh?” Lonna’s face scrunched in confusion.
“Can you mind your own business?!” Lonna was taken back as Suga screamed at her. “No matter where or what I’m doing, I’m free to it!” He left Lonna behind in her shock as he walked into the house. He instantly regretted his actions, but his pride wasn’t allowing him to apologize. He just wanted to go to bed.
“Suga.” Lonna’s sad call stopped him. He closed his eyes and bit his bottom lip. The sound of her voice pained him more. “I only wanted to apologize. I didn’t know you were coming back for me, so I let Keun-suk take me home.”
“You don’t need to apologize to me for that.” He quickly made his way into the house. Lonna remained on the sidewalk as he left. Now the seed of doubt…is a sprout. The thought made small tears roll down her cheeks.
