Augustus's POV:

We walk home from the park at probably 5:00. I never thought that I could be that happy ever again since Hazel died. I have learned so much about Jess in just a few hours. When I first met her I thought that she would be shy and quiet but she is actually a very outgoing and talkative person. My mom was actually right, she is a perfect friend for me.

We stop in front of my house, and I turn to stand in front of her.

"You know, before today, I was a depressed mess because of Hazel. I'm glad we got to hang out, I feel a whole lot happier." I say.

"Well, I'm glad that we hung out to. Otherwise I wouldn't have any friends, and my first day of school tomorrow would be pretty rough." She mentions.

"Yeah, anyway, what grade are you in?" I say.

"Oh yeah, I'm a junior this year. It's probably going to be hard transferring here in the middle of the year especially with learning the new material and preparing for college etcetera etcetera..." she says with a worried look.

"I'm actually a junior to, it's not that bad. If you need help with any of your school work I'm always here."

"Ok, well thanks. I guess I will see you tomorrow at school maybe?" she says with a shrug.

"I guess I will try to go back, I haven't gone in a month, because, well, you know..." I say putting my hands in my pockets and looking at the ground.

"Hey, its okay, you don't have to talk about it." She puts her hand on my shoulder. I never noticed that she was almost the same height as me, and I'm a good 6 ft tall. She must have a height advantage in basketball, maybe she is a post player or something...

I look up and try to put a smile on my face in attempt to lighten the mood.

"Now that I know I have a friend, maybe I will try to go back to school. I'll see you tomorrow Jess." I wave to her and walk back into the house. She turns around after waving back and skips back to her house to.

As soon as I shut the front door my mom is immediately standing there waiting for me.

"So, Gus, how did it go?" she asks impatiently.

I run a hand through my short, brown hair and answered her.

"It was actually really nice. She's really cool, and I think we could be good friends. I'm even going to go to school tomorrow so she won't be lonely. I think this was just what I needed."

"Oh Augustus, that's great!" she says excitedly and she hugs me.

I'm not going to lie, I'm a little nervous about going back to school since I have missed so much, but I will get to hang out with Jess so hopefully all will go well.
