Song of the Chapter: We Look Like Lightning, The Wonder Years

Eva repeated the same things she did every night on stage, running out and laughing with everyone, playing and singing her heart out. Her final US tour show cover was one that would make anyone in the crowd excited. The first notes to Mr. Brightside by The Killers rang through the stadium and the exuberant screams on the fans below her eye line were priceless. Eva's eyes scanned the stadium as she sang, letting herself land right on the small bunch of her friends standing in the VIP area. Theo was smiling ear to ear watching the girl he loved be so happy. Jane and Sam were singing along, jumping so much the risers bounced. Spencer sat back watching proudly as one of her best friends performed so well. Alex was just in shock at how truly amazing Eva was at being herself on stage. She was practically Brendon.

The rest of the show ran smoothly and Eva ran backstage to meet up with everyone again. The bands had two nights here in LA before leaving to go international, and all the members weren't going to waste anytime doing anything but be with their significant others. Eva and Theo sat huddled together against the couch while listening to their friends talk about the concert happily. Brendon and Sarah were in the other room, talking about Eva and Theo, and even Alex came up. "Bren, Alex had to come stay a few nights during your tour run. I don't think Eva knows that he had to, but she told him to if he needed." They both knew Alex's situation at home, but the more he needed to stay was just a sign of how bad it was really getting. "What do we do, Sarah? He's in danger there."

"I've talked to him about it so much. He doesn't want to give his parents up, and he won't budge. We just have to be there for him when he needs a place to stay. He and Eva are so close, he'd tell us when he needs us." Brendon hesitantly nodded and rested his forehead comfortably against hers. "God, I love it when you talk rational to me." Sarah laughed and lightly punched her husband in the arm before kissing him and standing up.

Back in the other room, Theo was asleep, Jane and Sam following suit. Spencer had to go home, leaving just Eva and Alex. "Do you wanna take a walk?" Eva asked, already pulling a hoodie on and throwing one to the other teen before he could answer. Eva yelled to Brendon then followed Alex out the back of the venue and around the bus lot.

"Are you better then you were a few weeks ago?" the boy asked as he looked up at the stars. Eva looked over to him and just observed the way he watched the sky. "I think I am. I know Theo's scared. My weight's gone down a lot on tour, and I think that makes him think something bad will happen again." Alex looked back down to her and tried to compare before tour Eva to current Eva in his head, immediately seeing the difference. "Have you been skipping meals again?" Eva didn't want to answer, so she looked back up to the light-polluted sky, trying to trace the faint constellations. A hand pulled her chin down, forcing her eyes to his. "Somedays, others are just too busy to eat." She saw the disappointment. "I promise I'm trying okay? Please believe me."

"Eva, you're killing yourself!" he screamed into the empty streets of LA. She jumped at the sudden burst of anger. "Don't  you understand, people need you. Jane, Sam, Spencer, Brendon, Sarah, every band member, Theo, me! Please understand how much we need you." Eva took a step towards him and hugged him tightly, whispering apologies into his chest. This was the only time where she got it, where the truth clicked before the voices in her head. "I'm trying, but I'll try harder Alex." The boy nodded and pulled her tighter into his chest, running his fingers through her hair to try and help her calm down. Anymore pressure he put on her and she could go into a panic attack from all of the stress. He knew she was trying, but he was just so scare.

"How many nights have you spent at my house?" Alex tensed up slightly. "A few early on in the tour, and a few more in the last couple weeks." Eva looked up to the very tall boy again. His eyes were sad. "Please, can we tell someone? You're not safe, and they're not safe for themselves." Alex's head shook with great force.

"No one can know, E. This is too much, and I'll go somewhere where I'll be so unhappy. I can't tell anyone this, at least not now. Okay?" Eva nodded, similarly to Brendon when he talked to Sarah, and buried her face back in his chest. They walked for a bit longer. Alex looked at his phone, leaving him to be completely terrified. "Al, what is it?"

"My dad, he's coming here. I-I don't know why, I-I think my mom made him mad and he-he, I don't know." Eva grasped his shoulders and tried to calm him down as they stood in the empty street. She pulled her phone out and called Brendon all while trying to talk Alex down. "Hold on, okay? We can figure this out." Inside, Brendon and Sarah were running around, collecting the kids and trying to get all the band mates before finding Eva and Alex. "Please, Dad. He's terrified and I don't know where his dad is." The venue was only twenty minutes from where they lived, and at this time of night, traffic wasn't an issue.

Outside, Alex was sitting on a curb, quietly muttering things about what his dad could do. Eva stood over him, trying to get him to focus on her breathing. Nothing was working. The skid of tires caused both teenagers to jump slightly and turn around. They were met with a menacing man sprinting towards them. Immediately, they ran into the bus lot and tried to close the gate. Eva pushed harder and harder, but his dad was too fast. His fist met Eva's face then her stomach in seconds, paralyzing her for a moment. Alex kicked his dad before trying to get Eva. She stood up and kept trying for the gate to no avail. She was so weak.

The angry father rose up and tackled Alex, throwing punches left and right. Eva pulled him from his son angrily, leaving both men slightly shocked at her sudden, adrenaline-powered strength. "Stop for once in your fucking life! Your son is one of the best people in the world, and you are nothing. Why would you hurt someone who is changing lives, you asshole?" she screamed. She kicked the man hard in the gut before collecting Alex off the pavement and guiding him to the venue door. Right at the entrance stood everyone on tour. Brendon was on the phone with Gerard, telling him to come to the venue as fast as humanly possible. Pete stood in front of the group, guarding the kids and bands while preparing to jump in the fight. Eva almost got the beaten Alex to the door, until her whole world seemed to go in slow motion as Eva heard loud shots ring out from behind them.
