Chapter 11
Johanna gave me a nervous smile “Hey grumpy, we need to talk.”
I heard a gun click. And I realized a man stood behind Johanna with a gun pointed to her back.
I cursed myself for getting her involved. He whispered something to Johanna and pulled his gun away then pushed her forward. He walked casually forward like a day in the park with Johanna in the front. I took this as my cue to follow them.
I followed him and tried to look as natural as possible. I stared at Johanna and I cursed myself for ignoring her. I should’ve looked out for her. I was the reason for getting her involved in the first place. Then I realized that Brody was wrong, I could never open up to anyone.
I looked at the man in front of me and tried to start a conversation. ”There are metal detectors and everything. How did you get in?”
He stopped and I could picture the smile on his face as he replied, “I have my ways.”
We made a couple turns through the endless hallways and left the building.
He looked around for cameras and when he found it clear he pushed Johanna to the ground and took his gun out. “Down.”
Johanna seemed to be calm but I could see the fear in her eyes as she fell.
He turned to me and smiled with his gun pointed to Johanna. “You’re in deep shit after your little stunt with Tony at the diner.”
I sighed casually though I was screaming with fear in the inside. “And you came here because?”
He turned to see of Johanna was still there then turned back to me
“Let’s just say Jack isn’t happy with your little vacation. He didn’t like the three weeks Tony gave you.”
“Why didn’t he send Tony then.”
He smiled with a grin that reached from ear to ear “You won’t be hearing about Tony anymore.” He pulled the gun back and placed it in his pocket. “You have a week to come up with the money.”
I offered Johanna a hand and she took it. I looked at the druggie. “Where can I find you—to hand over the money?”
He was in the middle of walking when he turned and looked me in the eyes. “Don’t worry we’ll find you.”
I hugged Johanna. “You okay?”
“Yeah.” She looked up and our eyes met “What are you going to do?”
I didn’t respond as I watched her dust off her clothes. I was in enough trouble and having an argument with Johanna wasn’t going to do anything. Part of me felt like I was going to snap. I knew I wasn’t exactly good at holding my cool. “You should head back to school.”
She looked as me as if I’d grown three heads. “You’re so stupid! You don’t even know how much you owe him or why they’re even following. You don’t even know what you’re going to do. Report to the police or something!”
That’s when I snapped “And then what? Tell them how I used to be a rug dealer!”
I saw the shock in her eyes and part of me enjoyed it. Now I was the one who wasn’t left in the dark “You’re a-“
I continued as if she never spoke “He says they’ll fine me but I’m going to make sure they don’t.”
“You’re just going to run. How does that solve anything! Talk to someone.” She shouted, throwing up her hands. When she straightened, her brown eyes met mine and I could see the anger and disbelief in them. “I don’t mind being there for you. You know, you don’t have to be alone all the time.”
I looked away, breaking eye contact and replied bitterly “And look where that got you. If I stay, they’ll kill me but if I run at least I’ll have a chance—and you’ll be safe.”
