Chapter Twenty

*Paige's Side of the Event*

She can hear voices, a lot of voices.

They're singing.

Then she hears Michael singing.

Michael! Paige thinks, I can hear you!

Her eyes flutter open and pain shoots through her head and her body.

She sees Michael leaning out the window. He's singing to people outside.

Michael, I'm here! I'm awake!, she can't speak aloud.

Pain shoots through her head again, but it stays this time.

Ow, ow.

She hears Michael talking but all she can see is white now. She can't move.

Ow. It hurts to breathe. I can't breath. I can't breath. Ow, my heart. Michael! Help, she thinks.

She hears beeping and then she can feel Michael's hands around her face.

His hands are so warm.

She hears him yelling and she wants to yell back but she can't.

She thinks, I'm here. I'm awake. Ow, I need to breathe. I need to breathe, Michael. Michael, HELP! I can't BREATHE!

She can hear him, "No! No, Paige you have to stay with me here! Come on, Paige!"

She can't move but she wants to tell him, I'm trying, I really am trying! I can hear you Michael!

She hears him run out into the hall, yelling, then scuffling as a doctor yells at a nurse.

Paige hears the doctor talking about blood flow and thinks to herself begging, I just need to breathe. Help! Please!

She can feel Michael trying to grab her hand and yelling, "Paige, you have to stay with me! You can do it. I love you!"

Paige's vision comes back and she sees Michael crying at the doctor.

MICHAEL HELP ME!

Her body screams for air. She can't do anything.

Her throat tightens as she tries to push for air and her mind becomes foggy.

"Paige, I love you! I'm here for you! I'm here, I'm here," she can hear Michael cry at her.

She can feel herself slipping away as she thinks, I'm here, Michael! I'm awake, I'm alive! It's getting easier to breathe. I'm here! I love you too, Michael. I love you so much! I'm so sorry!

Her eyes allow her one last look at Michael's tear-stained face as she says in her head, I love you, before she plunges back into the darkness.
