Naoto Shirogane was a stiff first year at Yasogami High.  Naoto sported short, dark blue hair and deep blue eyes.  Naoto didn't hang out with anyone during school.  People called Naoto a loner, but I didn't think so.  Naoto was cool in my eyes, alone from the noisy, scary world.

I first saw Naoto in our class on floor 1, for first years.  Girls flocked over Naoto, claiming that Naoto was a mysteriously handsome boy.  It was kind of true.  I did find him handsome, even though I was also a boy.

But then, one day, a rumor spread throughout school.  It echoed through the walls and inside each classroom on all three floors.

Naoto Shirogane, our beloved boy, was actually a girl.

Naoto was a girl.

"Are you really a boy?"  One of my male classmates asked.

"Does my gender actually matter?"  Naoto replied, no particular emotion in her response.

"There's a rumor you're actually a girl, Naoto-chan!"  A loud girl in my class said.

Naoto looked a little annoyed.  "Please do not refer to me as 'chan'."

"Dude, there's no way she's a guy!"  A bully yelled.  "Guys don't have such cute faces and nice lips!"

"Yosuke-senpai is cute!"  A girl snapped, apparently defending one of our upperclassmen.

A boy in thin-framed glasses stood up.  "Naoto-chan is obviously a girl!  If not, Naoto wouldn't have avoided the question about her gender as she did!"

"Yeah, that's right!"  The bully shouted.  "Little girlie Naoto!"

"I can't believe I sent you a love letter!"  A long haired girl yelled, ashamed and embarrassed.

Everyone shouted at her.  They yelled insults and comments showing their disbelief.  I sat quietly, looking at the back of Naoto's head, mostly shrouded by her blue cabby hat.

Naoto looked around at her screaming classmates until we met eyes.  She stared at me, as if waiting for me to spew out insults like the others.  Suddenly, another girl noticed I wasn't saying anything else.

"Why aren't you saying anything?"  The girl loudly remarked.  Everyone turned to look at me.

"What, you scared to say something bad about Naoto?"  The bully snorted.

The glasses kid spoke again.  "Maybe he has a crush on her!"

The girl laughed.  "A crush?  On the guy-looking thing?  Are you into stuck up people?"

I was about to lose it, when the teacher walked in.

"Settle down!"  The teacher called out, calming everyone down from the uproar caused by Naoto's hidden gender.

But I had to admit, she had us all fooled.  She wore a men's school uniform instead of the houndstooth patterned skirt.  Though she lacked in stature, she talked in a way that put her way above all of us high schoolers.  Her voice was low enough to pass for a high school boy.

But she was actually a girl.

Girls were heartbroken.  Some cried.  Some complained because all of their love letters were a waste.  Some tried to blind themselves of that fact.

Boys made fun of her sometimes.  Otherwise, they'd leave her alone.  Some said that they were stupid to believe she was a "he".

But I was actually glad.
