I looked at the fire I had started in the hearth of the castle common room with great interest, the colour of the flames reflected my mood perfectly well, slight yellow, for my happiness. My mother put her hand on my shoulder and squeezed. I smiled and let my inner fire and heat die down, the flame died down with it, so I made my inner fire grow a little stronger still unsure of how to disconnect myself from the fire as my mother does, the fire grew stronger, as I did so.
"Well done," she said, "You have learnt a valuable skill with your magic, fire is going to be needed in the long cold winter months, which is why it was the first thing I taught you, don't worry the more you grow, the more you'll discover, and the more you'll be in control of it." She smiled at me then at the fire which let out a low red flame, reflecting my pride.
"Come on dinner will be served soon, father and our guests will be waiting." She stood up, I stared at the flames. At the age of 20 I had reached legal age to learn about my magic, and learn to control it. This was my first step, in learning, although this step could just have easily been to do with the other elements, but mother was right, this was a cold winter to come.
"Aisling come on." Mum called out
I looked at the flames again as I stood up, the creases on the royal blue dress were clear from where I had been sitting for the past 30 minutes trying to wield a flame.
"Princess Aisling, King Mekhi and Queen Jayleen are waiting for you at the dinner hall with the guests." One of the councillors said, I looked at her and smiled letting her take my arm. I looked back to the fire which was giving off Blue flames, to reflect my disappointment.
"Thank you Mave," I said as she escorted me, to the dining hall. I didn't look like a princess, my gown was covered in ash, partly burned, and was creased and torn from my efforts with the fire.
We arrived at the dining hall, I hugged her and she left, my mother strode it in the graceful posture the Queen of the Sheopris Ash Kingdom was known known for. She placed the red and black tiara on my head, on my black and red hair. She smiled at me, and together we crossed the hall to our places, everyone stood up and bowed before sitting down again. I looked at all the faces of the faes and faeries that had gathered, my anxiety grew stronger when I realized that I was heir to the throne, and I had to find a husband. I looked away from every taken seat at the table to my mother, as my inner fire grew stronger and a flame erupted from my fingertip. I concentrated on calming my emotions until the fire died down.
"We have gathered you all here today as we have made an offer, the offer of the hand of our Princess, in marriage." My father addressed the crowd, anger, and pride radiated off him I could see it on his face and in his posture.
Murmurs broke out clearly they were not happy about the offer of my hand even though I had little knowledge of magic, even though the requirements stated the princess should not marry until she has enough knowledge about the magic she wields, they weren't happy at the breaking of the law, my mother looked horrified and absolutely angry, "Not yet, we have made an agreement that she has to at least have passed three magic tests before getting married, and anyway as the half-fae, half-faerie princess, she has every right to pick who she marries, when she marries and we have NOT put her hand on offer." She yelled in rage.
