I finished up a few things on the latest footage I had to send to Robin and sent it off. I closed down all the windows on my screen and then sat back in my chair, taking a deep breath. This was the happiest I had been in a long while. For a long time, I assumed I was ok living on my own, but there was always this weird feeling that I never enjoyed about being in an empty house. Now it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I felt comfortable in my own home.
Having Addy around was so pleasant, even when I was in my room all day it was nice just knowing she was in the house. Every once in a while, I would get up to stretch and see a note under my door saying there was a sandwich or tea out on the hall table for me. When I finished at night she would be making dinner and I would help her out and afterward we would do the dishes together. It beat eating a pizza alone on my couch any day.
Even the little things of having a girl around the house were pleasant. Like walking into the bathroom in the morning and smelling faint traces of her perfume and seeing her make up neatly organized on the shelf. Seeing her books propped open on the arm of the couch and hearing her humming in the kitchen while she cooks. All these little things were just a friendly reminder that I wasn't alone.
The best part by far though was getting to go to bed at night and be cuddled up next to her. I felt warm and happy in her arms and I got the impression she felt safe in mine. Waking up next to her was easily the best way to start the day. Seeing her disheveled red hair shining in the sun and her sleepy green eyes sparkling as she was waking up filled me with indescribable joy.
A shout from downstairs pulled me out of my reverie.
"Sean! Dinner! I made tacos!"
"Ooo! Tacos, my favorite!" I shoved myself out of my chair and launched myself into the hallway and down the stairs, taking Addy down in the process. We both tumbled and we hit the living room floor, I had rolled at the last second making sure she was on top of me so she didn't hit the floor. She finally let go of me and sat up straight, straddling my hips, and pushing her chaotic wavy hair back off her face. We were both giggling like maniacs.
"You are so beautiful." I beamed up at her. She leaned down and kissed me hard on the lips.
"And you are so handsome, but there are tacos to be had... ya know the reason why you tackled me in the first place." I placed my hands on her hips.
"Ah yes but I see something else much more enticing." I leaned up to try to kiss her again but she just dodged me, rolled away and got up. She ran off into the kitchen giggling. I jumped up and followed behind her. I slid into the kitchen wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her into me. She squealed and laughed as I kissed her neck.
"We can eat tacos lass, but that won't keep me away from you all night."
"Ok, ok." She kissed me again. "Let's eat first though." She broke away again with a sly smile and went to grab plates from the cupboard. I followed behind her, grabbing silverware and heading to the table.
After dinner was through and we had finished the dishes, we went to relax on the couch. We played a few rounds of Rocket League and then she turned on a tv show she had been watching. After a few minutes I found myself drifting off to sleep with Addy's head in my lap.
I woke a few hours later to the sound of footsteps outside. I jumped a bit and looked down, worried I had startled Addy. She remined fast asleep, so I listened carefully to see if I heard anything else. When I didn't I swept her up in my arms and carried her off to our bedroom. I placed her in bed under the covers and headed back down to turn off the TV and the lights. As I got to the bottom of the stairs I almost slipped on a piece of paper that had been slid under the door.
"Let her go. She is mine."
My breath caught in my throat. There was no way he could be here. I had to be imagining this. But there it was plain as day in my very own hand. I took it into the kitchen with me and shoved it in a drawer for the time being. I would deal with it in the morning. We would have to call the detective, but there was no sense waking Addy up just to scare her. I checked out all of the windows and made sure everything was locked. After feeling confident that we were safe, I headed up stairs and slid into bed behind Addy. She rolled over and cuddled up to my chest.
"Where have you been?" She whispered, nuzzling me slightly.
"Just making sure we are all locked up nice and safe." I said into her hair, kissing her on top of the head.
"I am always safe with you Sean." I winced a bit, thinking that maybe I was betraying her just a bit by not telling her what I had found. Then I heard he breathing even out and I realized she had drifted back off.
"I love you Addy, I will do anything to keep you safe." I whispered into her hair. I placed another kiss on her head and drifted off as well.
The next morning, I woke with a start to the sound a shrill female voice yelling through the house.
"Sean William McLoughlin!" I jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs not bothering to grab a shirt or even stop to think.
"What's wrong! Addy? Are you ok!?" I screamed coming around the corner into the kitchen.
"What the fuck is this?!" She had a piece of paper in her hand and there was a fire in her beautiful green eyes that I don't think I had ever seen directed at me. All of the sudden all of last night came flooding back and I felt terrible.
"Listen Addy I can explain I swear!" I started to ramble and step closer but her hands balled up into fists so I decided to stop rather than risk getting punched.
"I certainly fucking hope so Sean, because I put all of my trust in you and then I wake up this morning to find a note, very similar to ones left by my stalker, in YOUR kitchen drawer and I'll be honest it looks really bad for you right now."
I stepped back once more, my back hitting the wall. "It showed up last night when we fell asleep on the couch. I had all intentions to tell you this morning I just didn't want to wake you up just to freak you out. I was honestly planning on telling you. I swear it." I finished and watched the color drain from her face. She slid to the floor and tears filled her eyes.
"Oh my god. Does this mean he is here?" She stared at the floor in front of her. I felt it was safe, and rather necessary for me to go closer now. I sat down on the floor next to her and brought her into my arms.
"It is going to be ok Addy. I won't let you out of my sight. Everything is going to be ok. I promise you." I rocked her a bit as she sobbed into my bare chest. I could feel her warm tears on my skin and it made me ache for her. "We will contact the detective and let him know what is going on. He is not going to hurt you again."
"I just wanted it to be over." She whimpered after a while. She had gained some composure and pulled herself away from me. We continued to sit on the kitchen floor in silence for a bit until I finally got up, picked the note up off the floor and reached for her hand.
"Let's go love, we are going to take care of this right now."
