Jay leaned far back into their seat, taking in another small and shaky breath. Their mother watched from her own seat, deciding she should give Jay time to process this whole thing.
Jay sat up straight after a while, their eyes darting to the side. "So, you just never bothered to tell me?" They murmured.
She hesitated, then frowned. "I never knew for sure. I just thought maybe-"
Jay cut her off, leaning forward. "How maybe, though? What lead you to that conclusion?"
There was hesitation again, this time the silence was much longer. Jay shifted in their seat, the anticipation burning their body.
"Your father." She said finally, averting her gaze downwards.
Jay flopped back in her seat again, another heavy sigh escaping their lips. "You said dad died-"
Their mother clicked a button, unlocking the car doors. "I never said he died." She countered.
Jay pushed the car door open as aggressively as they could manage. Which wasn't really much. Their whole body felt weak and light, and they felt like they might not even be able to walk.
Once Jay leaned forward and swung their legs, which were awfully lanky and already made it sort of difficult to get out, onto the pavement. They pushed up, wobbling on their feet. Their mother glanced over from her side of the car, seeming a little concerned.
Jay took two, stumbling steps forward, then returned to their normal walking pattern, just a little slower. Their mother nodded softly, walking towards the front door a little faster than Jay. She unlocked it swiftly, and the two of them made their way inside.
--
Jay's mother had insisted on both of them wearing comfy clothes, since she claimed it was a long story. So, now Jay sat on the sofa, wearing sweatpants and their usual grey hoodie. Their mother sat across from them, wearing almost the exact same thing, just in white.
"We really are related, huh?" She joked, trying to make Jay calm down.
Jay forced a laugh, looking down at their hands.
Their mother sighed, making a mental note that jokes weren't going to be helpful.
