"Hey Max, wanna have a choco bar?", asked Dwayne. Max shook his head expressionlessly. His face had no life in it. Dwayne wasn't surprised. He was used to this response now, but he was still worried about it. Ever since his parents passed away, he had been like that for years.
After Dwayne's parents adopted Max, he sat in a corner of his room, crying his life out. He cried for a whole week. Dwayne constantly mistook his eyes for tomatoes. Dwayne had always wondered how the big scar on his arm had appeared, but he chose it would be best if he didn't ask.
The next morning, Max went out to get some breeze hit his droopy face. After he came back, he saw the newspaper lying on the doorsteps. He picked it up and something caught his attention. For the first time, something had actually caught his interest. What he saw was an absolute miracle. He went in and showed the picture to Dwayne.
"Hey Dwayne!", he yelled. "Come check this out will ya!" Dwayne came sprinting down the stairs. He knocked his toe on to the edge of the wall but he didn't mind. He came up close and saw the picture. "Do you know what this thing is called?", Max asked. "I'm afraid I don't have the slightest clue.", Dwayne replied.
Dwayne was really happy for Max. He had seen a certain light in Max's eyes. A light which was never seen before. A light nothing but true happiness can give you.
"Hey mom! Do you have any idea as to what this thing is?", Dwayne asked eagerly. "Why, those are the northern lights! Why do you ask?""Nothing much mom. Just tell me where they're found." "Have you heard of this place called Nunavut?" "Ain't that in the North of Canada?" "Yup. They're quite the scene aren't they? The Northern Lights?" "So they are", replied Dwayne.
Dwayne sprinted up the stairs yet again. He went over to Max and told him what the "thing" was. "The Northern Lights eh? I've finally found my answer." He gave Dwayne a look. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?", asked Max with a cheeky grin. "Obviously. You want to frame that picture of the Northern Lights don't you? Ask my mum. I don't think she would mind." "Seriously Dwayne. How stupid can you get? I'm talking about actually going there. A trip. On foot." "You're kidding right?", Dwayne asked with a frown. He knew that once Max decided something, he'd never give up on it. "Quit asking questions. Today at 3 a.m., come to my room with your packed bags. We're gonna have to make a run for it." "No way I'm doing anything like that.", Dwayne said firmly. Max gave him a glare. "Fine. Whatever.", Dwayne said, unwillingly. He knew he couldn't deny Max.
