She ran. Those men were evil just like the bad men in the stories she'd been told. Her heart pounded and she felt short of breath but she was too scared to stop. Adrenaline rushed through her veins, she wished her mom would materialize, pick her up and whisper sweet nothings into her ear like she did anytime the girl had a nightmare. However deep down, the girl knew mum wasn't coming and that scared her to her bones. Running in the woods the dead of the night, wasn't something the 6-year-old wanted to repeat. Thorns tore through her dress and skin leaving bruises and scratches in their wake.
She saw a small pond which she dipped herself in before running again. Tears made their way down her face as the thought that she might never see her parents again crossed her mind. She wiped at her tears viciously. After a few hours, the adrenaline wore off and the child too weary to run climbed a tree to hide like she'd used to while playing hide and seek with her mom.
She earned more cuts in the process but it was worth it as she snuggled closer to a branch as she fell asleep almost immediately. A heavy downpour begun soon after, disrupting her slumber as cold seeped into her bones. Her clothes clung to her cold body and her hair plastered to her face. Her eyelids grew heavy and eventually shut on their own freewill.
When she woke up,she was on an old creaking bed. She tried to stand but her limbs ached, her body burned up and her throat was parched. The door creaked open,an older lady walked in offering her a cup of water which she gulped greedily . "Thank you" the child whispered. "You are welcome little one..." "Don't let them take me" she latched on to the woman's hand. The woman was confused"No one's here. You are safe." Oddly enough the girl believed her and fell into a fitful slumber.
