Remembering Nathalie Rowan

“I love you.” Those were the last three words eighteen year old Nathalie Rowan heard before the accident; the accident that would change her life forever.

Chapter one

{Half an hour before the accident; December 20th, 2011}

 Nathalie and James were walking along side each other, holding hands as they walked into the ice cream shop that they had gone to together since they were ten.

“Mint Chocolate Chip please!” Nathalie chirped to the kind old woman behind the bar. Susannah, her name was.

She smiled and said “Of course dearie, anything for my favorite girl on her birthday!”

“Hey, what about me? Aren’t I your favorite too?” James said faking hurt. Nathalie laughed and punched him in the arm lightly.

“Well, yeah, but it’s not your birthday silly! It’s mine that means I get top priority!” Nathalie said, puffing out her chest. She couldn’t be serious with him and started giggling.

“Well, I’ll have Double Chocolate Chip please Susannah.” James told the kind old lady while hugging his longtime girlfriend to him. Susannah smiled at the young love birds as James paid and Nathalie put up a struggle as always, even though James always won. They walked to a table and sat down, enjoying their ice cream, while taking bites off of one another’s.

{20 minutes later, 10 minutes before the accident}

James and Nathalie walked outside the shop together after finishing their ice cream cones. James noticed Nathalie was cold so he pulled her in close while they walked in the snow, her green eyes sparkling. He turned her around and pulled her in front of them, brushing a little bit out of her caramel brown hair out of her face.

“I love you.” He said and kissed her softly. Little did they know that a drunk driver in a blue truck was careening towards them, coming at full speed in Nathalie’s direction. Soon, everything went black.

{Three weeks after the accident; January 10th, 2012}

Bright white light shone in Nathalie’s eyes as she woke up, her mother sleeping in a chair right next to her. “…Mom? What am I doing here?” She asked and immediately her mother woke up with a start.

“Oh honey, good you are awake. James will want to see you.” He mother told her.

“Wait, who is James?” She asked, having absolutely no idea who that boy was.

“Honey, get the doctor!” Her mother cried to her father who she noticed was right next to her.

Her father ran out of the room. Nathalie racked her brain for any memories of a boy named James but drew a blank. Actually, her memories came to a stop right after her ninth birthday. The doctor came in with a handsome young man who Nathalie found familiar but couldn’t put a finger on it. He had sandy blonde hair and dark brown eyes. His arm was in a cast as was his leg.

The doctor walked swiftly over to Nathalie’s bedside and started asking her questions, none of which she had the answers to.

“Nathalie, do you know today’s date?”

“Umm… December 20th?” She said uncertainly.

“In what year do you think it is?” The doctor said patiently.

“Err… 2003?” She asked. She really had no idea what year it was, so she just went with the year of her ninth birthday.

“Sweetie, its January 10th, 2012.” The doctor told her. She noticed that the boy in the corner looked like he was going to cry.

“Um, excuse me, but who are you?” She pointed to the boy in the corner.

Her mother, father, and the doctor looked around awkwardly for a moment before her mother said

“We will be out in the hallway.”

Nathalie gave her mother a look but she just looked at her sympathetically and walked out. The boy hobbled over to her on his crutches and pulled up a chair. Nathalie watched him, but still couldn’t figure out who the heck he was.

The boy sighed before he said “Nathalie Rowan. I am your best friend since we were ten and boyfriend since we were fifteen. We have been dating for three years now. You have been in a coma for three weeks because you and I were hit by a drunk driver on your birthday.”

She looked down where he was now holding her hand. He looked down took his hand off of hers. He hadn’t noticed his hand was on hers, it was just force of habit.

“Um, I’m sorry, but I don’t know who you are. You look familiar but I still don’t know who you are. I don’t even know your name!” She told him sadly. He really was a cute boy, but she didn’t have a boyfriend, or a guy best friend for that matter.

He sighed deeply. “My name is James Holland.”

She paused for a minute. “Well, you are cute James Holland, but nope don’t ring a bell.”

“You think I’m cute?” He said smirking.

“Really, that’s all you got out of that sentence?” She asked him, laughing.

“Yep, see, just like old times!” He said smiling.

“I still have no idea who you are so could you please leave?” She said with her eyes closed.

“Fine, I will, but please, just give me nine weeks, and I will prove to you that you are my girlfriend.” He pleaded.

She thought for a moment.

“Fine. I will. But first you have to give me your number.” She said batting her eyes at him.

The two exchanged numbers and James left.

Outside the hospital room, he met up with her parents, Julie and Max.

“She had no clue who I was but I made her give me nine weeks to get to know her again and convince her that I’m her boyfriend.” He told her parents. Julie frowned and pulled him in for a hug.

“Well, honey, feel free to come over whenever you want, just make sure to give her enough rest; she has been in a coma for three weeks. Maybe then she will have some recollection of who you are.”

James walked out of the hospital and walked over to his car. He sat in it and ran his hands over his face. He couldn’t believe what had happened that night. If he could trade places with her he would in a minute, just so she wouldn’t have lost her memories. He had finally told her he loved her, and that all just got washed away.

Well, now he just had to help her remember her teen years and most importantly, him. Help her remember Nathalie Rowan.
