Hello my lovelies! I'm so excited that you've stumbled across this! It's a cute songfic based on Benny/Roy still being at the diner. I hope you all like it as much as I do and be sure to listen to "I Don't Dance" by Lee Brice as you do it, it fits the story really well! Enjoy!
DISCLAIMER: I only own Natalia, Lee Brice owns his songs and Eric Kripke owns Benny, sadly :( Anywho, enjoy!! :D
It certainly had been a bad day. Lizzy had somehow sprained her ankle, so she couldn’t drive herself to the diner that morning. When I went to crank on the AC to combat the harsh heat in the small restaurant, it clanked a few times and then died. Then, with what seemed like a thousand more things going wrong, I found myself in front of the old stereo beside the grill Roy always cooked on.
“Damn radio.” I growled, throwing my balled up fist on the top of the static filled receiver. It just spit out even louder static.
“Need some help?” I yelped, turning on my heels to face the person nearly sandwiched against me.
I pressed a hand to my racing heart when I recognized the baby blue eyes and lazy grin on an unshaven face. With a loud huff, I slapped the back of my hand against his hard chest, gaining a rumble of laughter from the southerner.
“Jesus, Roy, you scared the shit out of me.” His rumbling turned to full on belly laughing as he leaned against the counter right beside the radio I was still fighting with.
“I was trying to get the radio station but, I can’t-” My voice broke off for a fraction of a second when I felt Roy’s warm hand rest on top of mine, that was death-gripping the rusty dial.
Lightly holding my hand against the dial, he turned it a few times before slowly, and accurately landing it on the only station that came in loud and clear, filling the already heavy air with blasting country music. Specifically a new song by a break-out artist.
“-get it.” I finished my sentence for no real reason, not able to take my eyes off his hand resting on top of mine. When I gulped the lump growing in my throat, I swore I saw a flash of a smile pass across his rough face.
“Thanks.” I squeaked, slowly moving my hand out from under his.
Roy was a great guy who had been good to me from the moment we met. When I first stumbled into the diner, I was battered, bruised, and on the run from my drunken husband. He and Lizzy graciously took me in, no questions asked, and offered to have me help around the diner. What was supposed to be a one night thing turned into several days, then weeks. It wasn’t long before my husband sobered up enough to remember that he had a wife.
When Max, my husband, first showed up at the diner, it was just me there. Lizzy had left and Roy wasn’t in for another hour. He started breaking things and flipping tables. Thankfully there wasn’t anyone else in the diner at the time to see his tantrum. Just as he was about to raise his hand to me, Roy came out of no where, grabbed Max by the back of the neck, and threw him face first into the counter.
Roy refused to release the bleeding, begging man until he apologized to me for everything that he had done and agreed to sign the divorce papers I had drafted up after the first week of staying with Lizzy. Since that day, Lizzy always had me and Roy open, and if it happened to be a day that she was to open with him she’d have an ‘accident’ that would make her unable to come in until later. I think it was more to push her handsome cook on me than to safeguard her well being.
“Anytime, Natalia.” A chill ran up my spine like it did every time my name rolled off his tongue.
I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t have feelings for the Louisiana-born man. I’d never met any guy more like a gentleman than him. He was sweet and caring, with a charm that could swoon every girl in the whole state, but he only seemed to use it on me. Roy was a protector and an all over wonderful person who would help anyone.
