Toni is sent to the hospital due to a firework mishap.

The plethora of cheap looking patriotic beer cans just screamed one of America's biggest drinking days. But that same America had to be up early Thursday morning, showered, shaved, made up, and back to business – all because this year's 4th of July fell on a Wednesday.
Cheryl rolled her eyes at the mess sprawled on the sidewalk along Riverdale High. More so at the thought that the holiday was smack in the middle of the week, which totally ruined the chance of a long weekend.
As the first bell rang, she entered the classroom and settled on her seat, instantly noting which students were out partying the night before, as evidenced by their sunglasses and bowed heads. Even Archie, who sat right behind her, seemed to be hit by the Brown Bottle Flu, no doubt drinking one too many beers.
The teacher luckily wasn't in yet. This gave Cheryl a bit of time to grab Archie's attention.
"I could only carry three of these in my purse," she stated randomly as she pulled out water bottles from her bag, "One is for you," she said as she placed the bottles on Archie's desk.
He swallowed, clearly too nauseous to speak up, but mouthed a thank you and smiled at her.
"One is for Veronica, obviously," she added with a sassy tone.
Archie picked up one of the bottles and drank from it, eyeing the last one, wondering who Cheryl wanted to give it to.
Before he could talk, however, Cheryl beat him to it by telling him he should decide who among Betty, Kevin, or Josie would need it more. With that, the conversation was over.
The rest of the morning was mopey as expected. What student would have wanted to come to school right after a holiday anyway? Even Cheryl, who possessed a 4.0 GPA, was very out of it today – red, whites and blues being a little too much for her liking; and the absence of a certain Serpent didn't help either.
It had been a while since the almost-kiss. Since then things have only gotten more defined between the two, the unyielding tension just building each passing day.
At lunch she kept eyeing the Serpents' table right from where she sat with the Vixens. That one kid, Fangs Fogarty, had both arms wrapped around a whole watermelon to keep it from falling from their table. It was a weird sight to see, but what would one expect of those Southsiders? There's probably drugs in there, she thought to herself and chuckled.
Next to Fangs was the tall one, Sweet Pea. He was eating a sandwich. In front of him was a long-haired boy, and next to that boy was one other blonde boy with a ponytail. The spot where Toni usually sat was vacant today, leaving the Serpents' corner remarkably dull that day. Her Toni was nowhere to be found.
Not that Toni was hers for her to be searching in the first place. And it wasn't as though she could ask the Serpents where Toni was. No one dared talk about the gay in the air whenever she and Toni spent time together. Not even Kevin spoke a word about the obvious sexual tension that hung in the hallways after he had caught them "hanging out" last Friday while he was on one of his nightly jogs. Of course, "hanging out" meant milkshakes at Pop's, Topaz leaning in with a lip bite as Cheryl seemed to pull a smooth one-liner.
Everybody around them could see it. It was just there. So the day after Independence Day where one half of the tandem was not present, people turned their eyes away from the redhead, fearing the hissyfit that may arise should they bring up the other's absence.
