white. that was all jinyoung saw when he opened his eyes. everything was white. he blinked his eyes a few times to get used to his surroundings and everything gradually became clearer. the room he lay in was completely unfamiliar to him.
turning his head to the side, jinyoung saw his mom sitting in a chair. she was asleep, so jinyoung reached out with his hand to shake her awake, but he froze when he noticed tubes attached to his arm by needles. confusion clouded jinyoung's mind. was he in... a hospital room? what was going on?
he heard a soft gasp and looked up to see his mother staring at him with wide, teary eyes. jinyoung opened his mouth to speak, but his mom stood up abruptly, grabbing onto his hand with her own. she shouted for a doctor, her voice scratching slightly with desperation and hope at the same time.
a few people rushed in, they crowded around him and one shined a dull light in his eyes, checking the response of his pupils. they asked him questions and there was so much jinyoung wanted to ask as well, but he was unable to form words. everything felt as if it was playing in slow motion, time dragging on endlessly. jinyoung felt so tired, like his body would sink through the mattress at any moment.
eventually, slowly, his eyes closed and he drifted to sleep.

when jinyoung woke up the second time, he felt more refreshed, but still confused. it was like what happened early was replaying; he noticed his mom sitting in a chair next to him, but she wasn't asleep this time. "jinyoung..." she whispered, leaning forward and gently grabbing his hand. "m-mom..." jinyoung muttered, his voice hoarse.
tears began to fill the woman's eyes and she smiled at him, nodding her head slowly. "yes, jinyoung, it's me– it's mom." she reached up and smoothed his hair down in a loving manner, but it made jinyoung's stomach turn.
"mom..." jinyoung repeated, a million thoughts running through his head. he swiped his tongue over his lips upon noticing the dryness of his mouth. his mom silently took a glass of water that was sitting on a nightstand next to the bed and handed it to her son. jinyoung gulped down the refreshing liquid for what seemed like an eternity to him.
once he had collected himself, he voiced his thoughts. "what's going on, mom? why am i in a hospital? where's– where's jackson...?" he instantly noticed his mother's gaze fall. a long moment of silence washed over the room and it definitely didn't help fade the dread in the pit of jinyoung's stomach.
eventually, his mother's voice broke the silence. "you... don't remember? jinyoung, sweetie... you were in an accident..." jinyoung's eyes desperately searched her face for any possible hint that she was lying to him, making up some story to get back at him for loving someone of the same sex, but there was none.
jinyoung shook his head quickly, his head beginning to throb. "no, i wasn't in an accident. i was just with jackson yesterday. where is he?" jinyoung pressed on, growing more anxious. a frown etched its way onto his mother face along with an obvious look of pity. "jinyoung, jackson's... he's dead..."
the raven-haired boy's eyes grew wide and his vision became blurry as he stared at his mother through tears. "no, no! that's impossible, mom, it's impossible!" he inched closer to the woman, arms shaking when he shifted his weight onto them.
"you were in a car accident with jackson and you were both badly hurt, but jackson didn't make it to the hospital. jinyoung, i'm so sorry. i know how much you loved him..." the older woman took a deep breath before she continued speaking. "you've been in a coma for two years..."
jinyoung felt like the world was spinning around him and disbelief spreading throughout him. with tears streaming down his face, he whispered, "mom, don't say that... i know how much you hate jackson, but don't lie about something like this to me, please... it's just cruel..."
his mom shook her head slowly. "i'm not lying to you, jinyoung, i promise." she said quietly, reaching up to touch his face, but jinyoung swatted her hand away. he sat up and grabbed onto her shoulders out of desperation. surprised, jinyoung's mom attempted to back away and jinyoung fell from the hospital bed. pain washed over his body like a tidal wave when he hit the cool, hard floor of the hospital.
he wailed and buried his head in his hands, sobs infinitely leaving his mouth. he heard his mom run out of the room as he lay there on the floor. jinyoung felt his heart clenching in his chest, it felt like someone was squeezing the organ mercilessly. this had to be a dream– it just had to be. he'd wake up and be in bed with jackson again. please, please, please let this be a dream...

suicide warning
*jinyoung never got to say goodbye to jackson. he never got to tell the other male how much he loved him, or how happy he made him, just one last time. not once did he visit the grave of his deceased boyfriend.
weeks after being released from the hospital, jinyoung failed time and time again to get over the incident. losing the love of his life really took a toll on him. he never left his room, or at least it seemed like it, and his mother started to worry. after bringing some soup to him, she went downstairs and called the hospital, asking what she should do.
she made a check-up appointment for jinyoung and upon opening the door to his bedroom again to inform him, the air was squeezed from her lungs. her son lay on the floor next to his bed, knife in hand and blood just beginning to pour from his forearms. his teary-eyed gaze traveled shakily to his mom and when their eyes met, she fell to the floor with a gasp.
the woman crawled to her son and she gathered him in her arms, rocking him slowly and she fumbled for her phone. jinyoung whimpered when she began dialing a number and he placed his hand over hers, shaking his head when she looked at him. jinyoung spoke breathlessly, "mom, please... i just want to be with him again... whatever it takes..."
jinyoung's mom called the hospital anyway and an ambulance arrived at their house soon after. the paramedics were welcomed by a wailing mother covered in blood and cradling her only son in her arms. they rushed jinyoung to the hospital, but it was no use– he passed away in the ambulance on the way there.
