It's raining hard when I finally step off the giant tan bus with a Proactiv ad on the side. My legs feel like they're filled with lead, and I instantly regret wearing shorts. Even my leg hair is soaked. I thank God that my bags and stuff are already in our dorm room. I really hope that Nya is the only one I'm sharing it with. She gets off the bus, her $50 purple skinny jeans sticking to her legs more than usual. If that's even possible.
The college we used to go to was shut down due to unsanitary environments. That probably was from the moldy bathrooms and the mice that escaped one day from the other dorm's fridge. I have to say, it was really fucking gross. But we got used to it and trudged on.
However, from first glance, it looks pretty nice here. Through the rain I manage to catch my eyes on flower beds filled with roses at the bottom of the dorm circle and--wait, is that a pool? The water gleams in the distance and I curse under my breath. If anything, I am not a water guy. Fire was more appealing to me. Nya even said if I dyed my hair red my hair would look like flames lapping from my head.
"What room do we have?" I say to Nya, the rain now flattening my dirty brown hair to look like one of the Beatles.
Nya flips her hair back, her bangs too long for her face already. A trickle of water goes down her back, and she squeaks. I laugh.
"7?" She says, shuddering. "I can't remember."
We run through the rain-Nya almost falling in her flats-and we stumble up the stairs. I try our key in room 7, and sure enough, it unlocks. Hell yes.
The furniture we have is already set up, thank God. I didn't want to have to put it all in place. The walls are a brown, fleshy colour, like someone who's tanned too much. The kitchen is surprisingly clean--maybe even better than the one at home. There are only two bedrooms, but it's fine for me and I make sure mine is in order.
The walls are an ocean blue, instantly making my scarlet bedsheets stand out more than they should. I groan quietly, but it's better than a dark purple, like Nya's room. Honestly whoever painted these rooms was a fucking douche bag.
"Not bad," I say as Nya comes in, resting her head on my shoulder. I used to hate it when my sister did that, but now it's more comforting ever since Mom passed. I crave the need to smoke again, but it's already been a month and I promised my family I'd stay sober. I'm not even allowed to take drugs here anyways. We sit on the bed and don't say anything for a long time until there's a knock on the door.
"I'll get it," I mumble, ending our family time to open the door.
There's a smallish guy standing at the door, his flaming red hair bringing out the freckles on his face. He has big blue eyes and wears a blue and white hoodie with a lightning bolt on the chest and black shorts. He looks really confident in himself even though he only reaches my shoulder.
"Hey," He says. "Are you guys the new peeps?"
"Uh, yeah," I say. "We just got here."
"Well, welcome to Ninjago University," He says, holding a hand out for me to shake. With two fingers slightly curved inward it looks like he's pointing a finger gun at me. "I'm Jay. Jay Walker."
I shake his hand, a lot less confidently than him. Even his voice has a big ego. "I'm Kai, and that's Nya in there."
Jay leans past me to see Nya, and he seems to look at her for a longer than I wanted. However, I don't do anything as not to make a bad impression and Jay looks back at me with a rather flustered look. He regains his cheeky smirk in a matter of seconds, though. Oh God, please don't say what I think you're gonna say.
"So," he says, throwing his hands out at me like we're in some big business conference. "Since you guys are the noobs here, we're throwing a party to celebrate your arrival here. It's gonna be some crazy shit. Starts at 8 tomorrow night."
SHIT. He made a fucking party for us. He said the one thing I didn't want him to say.
" Oh, I don't know," I say, twiddling my thumbs. "I mean, we might be bu--"
"Of course, we'd love to go," Nya says, putting an arm on my shoulder. "Because nothing beats a party, right?"
Jay seems to beam even more when Nya says yes. "Really? Great! So I'll see you guys tomorrow! By the way, the party's at my dorm, which is actually right next to yours. It's number 8."
"Yeah, see ya then." I say, closing the door once he leaves. I instantly turn on Nya. "Why the fuck did you say yes?!"
"Whaddya mean?" She cries. "You love parties!"
"Yeah, with people I've actually met before!"
"Jay seems fine!"
"Not after he gave the heart eyes on you!"
"Oh, give that a break!"
"You can't just brush off the fact that he has a fucking crush on her!"
But she's already stormed off and slammed her bedroom door. I sigh, and sink down onto the sofa. I see lightning flash through the closed blinds and a rumble of thunder hits my eardrums. I slowly get up and trudge to my room, feeling like shit. It's not even end of the first day and I've started a fight with her. Already this is going to be a long year.
