Beep. Beep. Beep. I sat beside her bed and grasped her cold hand. Tears streamed down my face as I tried to remember her smile, they way her face lit up whenever she was happy. My beautiful twin sister, lying here unconcious, on this hospital bed for God knows how long. Doctors said she was in critical condition and there was a small chance she would survive. I was holding onto that small chance and the only thing I could do was hope.
Mom and Dad were your average high-school sweethearts who eventually got married after college. They had me and Andrea after a few years. My childhood was amazing and my parents were still in love until one day, it all changed. My dad would come home late and my mom would come home from work and just burst into tears. Andrea and I tried to soothe her but we were only 8, what could we do?
Soon my dad lost his job and became an alcoholic. He would spend his day at the bar and it was basically like living with one parent. My mom worked two jobs and on top of that had to care for both of us. We were 11 at the time so we could care for eachother. Andrea and I would rotate positions for chores and cooking lunch and making dinner. Those 7 years were hell and back for my family.
Whenever my dad came home, it was worse. He would beat my mom and call her horrible, horrible names. I couldn't stand it.
He still is that horrible. Mom, Andrea, and I stay as far from the house as possible. We're staying at my single aunt's house a couple streets away.
"Why don't you just leave him Karen, file a divorce and get it over with?" my aunt would plead but my mom would disagree.
"I know there's still that sweet boy I met in high school in his heart. One day, he'll turn back to how he is." She would always reply.
As my mom still thought there was the man she fell in love with inside of him, we visited him every weekend. It was the same thing every time, my dad yelling and me and my sister locking ourselves in the bathroom so we wouldn't have to face him.
"Excuse me miss, visiting hours are over." A lady in a white uniform tapped my shoulder and I was shaken from my trans.
"Wha- oh yeah sorry I'll just be leaving." I stammered as I wiped the tears from my face with my sweater sleeves. She looked at me with pity and then said, "I'll give you a couple minutes to get yourself together." I managed to give her a sympathetic smile as she left the room.
I looked at my sister one last time and kissed her forehead.
"Keep on fighting Andrea, keep on fighting." I whispered in her ear and left the room.
