penny hughes was an extraordinary girl. she prided herself on her emotional maturity and overall wisdom in the area of romance and love at her young age. the girl runs a fairly popular business for her middle school peers- she's known as the love doctor. her mother allows her to run her business in her living room at $2 per problem.

penny's mom and dad are divorced, she lives with her mother but visits her dad, who lives on the "bad" side of hawkins. he is often out drinking and is never around to see his daughter. though her older brother jason lives with him, he has sort of a short temper, and is over protective of his little sister. though penny and her mom face these problems the two are pretty stable.
