John's POV

Alex opened the door with a frown, looking up at me through his lashes. Hercules was behind him, scanning me warily.

I swallowed harshly and wrapped my arms around Alex's small frame, burying my nose into his hair.

"Shit, John. What's the matter?" Alex gasped, wrapping his arms around my waist. Tears began to build behind my eyes. I held him tightly, wishing the world would just disappear so I could kiss him again.

Someone cleared their throat. I looked up through blurry eyes to see Aaron raising his eyebrows at me. With a sigh, I let go of Alex and wiped my eyes.

"It's difficult seeing you act so pathetic. Makes it hard to despise you." Burr smiled fakely.

Alex turned to him with a shocked frown. Hercules smiled tightly at me and retreated into the depths of the house.

"Aaron! What the hell!?" Alex hissed at him with a scowl.

I wiped my eyes.

"No, Alex. Don't bother. I'll see you back at your dorm." I sniffed, wiping my eyes.

"No, John. That was out of line. Aaron, you need to apologise."

"Why the fuck should I? I'm not the one going after taken guys." Aaron shrugged scornfully. I sighed and glared numbly at the floor.

"What the hell has gotten into you?" Alex muttered angrily. I saw Aaron's eyes narrow to slits as he gave Alex a fierce side eye. Alex stilled instantly, biting his lip.

"Don't speak to me like that." Aaron growled. He took a few steps towards Alex, grabbing his wrists. I heard Alex gasp in pain and I watched, confused, as Aaron yanked Alex into his chest.

"You go along with what I say, okay Alexander?" I heard Aaron whisper into Alex's ear. Alex bit his lip again, nodding distractedly. Aaron pushed him forwards towards me.

The smaller boy turned to me and flashed a wry smile.

"To my dorm?" He asked monotonously. I nodded.

The trip up to his dorm was silent, but after we heard the door slam to Aaron's lodging he reached out and took my hand lightly.

When we got in, we were both still choking on words. Alex led me to the kitchen and put the kettle on to boil, before grabbing a packet of Nerds from the cupboard and sitting across from me.

"Y-you know, my turtle loves Nerds. The... the sweets not the clique. He likes the bright colours." I stuttered through an awkward laugh.

Alex's eyes shot up with a cheeky smile that made me melt.

"A turtle? You never cease to amaze me, Laurens." He chuckled. "What is it called?"

"Don't laugh," I pleaded, "He'a called Wigglebutt."

Alex burst out laughing. I spluttered out a laugh, half heartedly explaining how he shakes his butt when being given a bath through fits of mirth.

"Wanna meet him?" I asked as the kettle came to a boil. Alex nodded, still laughing, going to pour us our drinks. He had a coffee. At eight at night. He caught me staring disapprovingly and blushed.

"It's my lifeline." He mumbled into the mixture, cheeks reddening sheepishly. I rolled my eyes at his dramatics and asked for a hot chocolate because I'm a child.

He dragged me carefully through to the living room, holding the mugs of drink out in front of him. As we sat down on his sofa, some of his hot coffee slipped out over the rim of his mug.

Swearing quietly, I saw him retract his hand quickly. He went to roll up his sleeve, pulling the burning material away from his wrist with a wince.

I frowned. "Damn, are you oka-"

As Alex pulled his sleeve up, nodding in embarrassment, I caught sight of four dark bruises on his wrist. They were perfect finger marks. My words got caught in my throat and Alex's eyes widened at my expression.

He looked down at his wrist with a sad smile.

"Please don't look at them." He mumbled.

"What the fuck, Alex. Was this Burr? I will kill that son of a-"

"Please." Alex whispered.

He was looking straight down, brown eyes brimming with tears. He had bought his teeth down on his lip, creating deep red welts on the soft skin. He was anxiously rubbing his wrist, trying hard to cover up the bruises.

I sighed.

"Fine. Okay, fine. I won't kill Burr." I said softly, reaching out my hand towards Alex's face. I gently used my thumb to pull his lip out from between his teeth, tilting his head up towards me.

I leaned in close, wrapping my arms around his shoulders.

"Why do you stay with him?" I mumbled into his ear.

Alex sighed against my chest, pulling back from the hug with a small smile.

"I guess... it's mainly that he was there for me when nobody else was. After Hercules found me in the hallway half dead, Aaron was the first person to actually like me since I came to America."

I winced at this, glaring down at the leather of the sofa. Alex caught my expression and smiled softly.

"But now I've got you. I could leave him. I could. But I won't. I won't because he has this way of making me feel special. He really likes me, John. He just gets angry if I go against him."

I rolled my eyes, recalling my conversation with Aaron. I wish I could have told Alex about what his boyfriend had said, but it would tear him up.

So I stayed silent.

Alex wiped his eyes harshly, reaching over the table to grab the remote. He switched onto Netflix and put on an episode of Sherlock.

"I love Sherlock! Benedict Cumberbatch is daddy." I giggled into my mug, taking long chugs of hot chocolate.

I looked up to find Alex staring straight at me, a look in his eyes that I couldn't quite place. I felt my heart beat speed up. He grinned at me, turning back to the screen.

"You have no idea what you do to me." I mumbled.

"What was that?" Alex mumbled with a stupidly wide smile.

"Nothing, you assbutt." I rolled my eyes at him.

"Assbutt? Like Supernatural assbutt?" Alex asked, eyes widening in anticipation. I turned to him, bringing my knees into my chest.

"Yes, Supernatural assbutt." I laughed at Alex's excited face.

"Woo! Supernatural buddies!" He held up his hand for a high five. I slowly pressed my palm against his and laced my fingers through his. Looking him straight in the eyes, I smirked. His smile dropped, breaths speeding up. I leaned in close to him.

"Misha could get in my ass any day." I murmured. Alex slapped me on the shoulder, rolling his eyes at my stupidity.

"Really John? I thought you'd be a top?" Alex giggled.

"Depends who I'm with," I shrugged, draining the rest of my hot chocolate. Alex laughed sweetly and finished his coffee.

My breaths quickened when I noticed that we both put our mugs down at the same time.
