Nadia's POV -

My mother had just finished preparing dinner for us and we were about to sit down, when the screaming started.

Startled I drop my spoon and I ask, "Mother what-what was that?"

"I do not know Nadia, but whatever it is, I do not like the sound of it. Hurry let us make sure we are as locked in as we can be." My Mother says, standing up quickly.

I go over to the two heavy front wood doors and slide the big wooden latch across both of them to lock it. Mother started to shut the wooden window shutters on the rest of the downstairs rooms.

I take the stairs two at a time to the upstairs rooms, to shut those window shutters a well. The last room I reach is mine. I walk into my room and go to the window, looking out to the dark Egyptian desert, I see a few houses still lit up, from their fireplaces inside. The lights look pretty against the vast dark blue backdrop. That also reminds me to make sure to put out our fireplace.

The screaming has stopped for now, but I still close my window; and head back downstairs to my waiting mother. I pull out my chair and join her at the table.

"Oh Nadia, what has come of this town, did you know that last month, the Merchant Todd's youngest daughter got taken one night. Out of nowhere. Now you see why I keep you hidden?"

My mother recently has taken to keeping me inside the home at all times. She won't even let me go to the market anymore. I have not seen any of my friends in a few months. I wonder if they think I was taken. It is quiet annoying the way my mother is being lately, but I understand.

These last few months, young women, have been stolen from their families and friends during the night. It is saddening to know that Merchant Todd's youngest was taken, her name was Layla. I am good friends with her older sister, Nikki. Oh poor Nikki, she must be heartbroken. She loved her sister, and was always so protective of her. I must see Nikki soon.

Dang Mother really put in a lot potatoes. I think as I swallow the starchy soup. I clear my throat to speak. "I know Mother, this is just a very difficult time for us and our town. Hopefully these bandits will leave us all alone now." I say with a sigh.

It really is putting a lot of stress on my Mother, though. Because most homes, okay probably all homes, except ours, have a male figure to protect the family and provide for them. My Father died a few years ago, everyone in our nosy town expected my Mother to remarry. So that someone could provide for us.

Instead she found herself a housecleaning job and is providing just fine for us. I love my Mother for that. She's showing me that I can depend on myself and I do not need a man to do things for me, and that I can stand on my own two feet just fine. Just like she is, my Mother is my role model.

But, unfortunately, woman are not supposed to do that. Woman have no rights here under our King's rule. It really is a mans world. The only reason we got to keep the house, was because Father died. If he had divorced my mother, she would have gotten nothing and had to pay more money to him, he would have even gotten me.

I hate these stupid laws. One is, Women can only speak at certain times, when in the presence of a man. Like what kind of bullshit is that.

Forgive me Mother, because I cursed. My Mother taught me manners but sometimes I just forget them with my temper. She hates it when I curse, she says I sound like a drunkard. Oh Mother, haha.
