Cigar smoke lingered in the air invading my nostrils. I felt uncomfortable and out of place sitting at the booth filled with large bulky men with half naked women dancing against poles wherever I looked. I'm pretty certain I'm not even legally allowed to be here, I'm not 18 yet! I tried not to show my unease listening to Mike talk to his father. In the half hour or so that we sat with them his father Mike Senior had held one stern 'don't fuck with me' expression the entire time. I felt squimish when ever he looked at me, or through me rather it felt.
He never directed a question at me, always at Mike and the others barely noticed I was sitting there at all. It made me feel inferior, invisible I didn't like it one bit.
"so dad I have some business I'd like to discuss with you" Mike announced in a formal business like tone. He changed when we walked in this room. His eyes turned hard and cold his tone formal and he barely spoke to me except to get the boys and himself a drink from the bar. When I reminded him I'm not of legal age to drink thus won't get served he looked at me In disgust.
"if they wouldn't serve you would I have asked you to do it? I know how old you are" he said then turning back to his conversation with the bloke sitting next to his dad.
Shocked and hurt at his words I stared at him in disbelief . Looking around the table nobody seemed to even bat an eyelid.
When I placed the drinks in front of each of them not one said Thankyou. I got a nod from Colton but that's it.
"Can it wait until another time son" his father suggested with a gesture of his eyes towards me indicating he did not want to talk with an outsider present.
"it's ok dad I trust her besides it involves Dakota."
"ok what would you like to discuss then" his father asked leaning forward on the table sipping his whiskey on the rocks.
"We have been looking for a new act for Friday nights. I think if we hired some dancers Dakota could be that act. She can dance, sing and coriograph. I have seen her work tonight."
I wha? Thanks for the heads up. I stared blinking at Mike discussing me as if I weren't there. Even worse deciding I even wanted to do this for me. What the heck happened to him. Since we walked up those stairs he has been another person. If I didn't know any better I'd say he had a split personality... Wait I don't know better. Maybe he does...
"if you say so son, hire the dancers see how she goes. You can arrange it all discuss the wages with Fran, she deals with the clubs finances now. Pamela had an unfortunate accident last week so she is no longer with us." he told his son as he swallwed the last of his whiskey then stood from his seat. When he did the other men stood aswell, almost in unison, leaving me to be the only person still seated at the booth looking up at these scary looking men as his father and the men moved out from the booth.
Mike and Colton shook hands with each of them as they walked past us leaving down the stairs. Again, not one of them acknowledging my existence except his father who called from over his shoulder before he disappeared down the stairs
"nice to meet you Dakota"
I stood staring at my boyfriend with my arms crossed tapping my foot. So much Anger swelled inside me I felt like I was about to spontaneously combust.
"why are you sitting there looking like a 2 year old having temper tantrum?" Mike snapped clearly unimpressed with my body language.
Colton quietly shuffled to the stairs quickly disappearing down them, obviously uncomfortable with the atmosphere.
"why... WHY...? I'LL TELL YOU WHY. Not only have you made me feel obsolete since we walked into this godforsaken room, not only did you speak to me like some blow in from the street and treat me like a freaking waitress nope that's not enough for you. You then go and decide that I want a job here at some club that I've never heard of that I'm too young to step in let alone work in doing something I'm not even sure I want to do." I fumed. Out of words I resumed staring awaiting a reply.
" First of all I told you there were things I'd have to teach you, like talking back to me in front of people. You must show respect especially in front of my father. Second, I also told you I was apart of a... Not so much a gang but along those lines so when I'm in a business environment I must act that way, I must show respect and not let anyone show me disrespect. Perhaps I should have told you that part so that's on me. Lastly, I thought I was doing something nice for you, you really enjoyed yourself up there tonight. I thought you would be excited about the idea of doing it more regularly. This club is the place to be, you could get scouted and become famous!" he explained becoming less agrivated as he reached the end of his speech. He seemed to relax a little more every minute since his father left.
"look I don't know I'll have to think about it but don't ever speak to me like that ever again I don't care who's around" I huffed.
"don't disrespect me in front of anyone and that won't happen" he retorted.
"you are impossible" I stated as I headed for the stairs intent on salvaging what was left of this crumby evening that had started as my 'celebration'. Didn't really feel like one anymore but surely enough liquor had the potential to turn it around.
