"Push!" He cried. A stillness filled the air before the cries of a newborn could be heard. This was supposed to be happiest day of their lives however it was tainted by the darkness that had haunted them since that fateful day.
As the young pair sat in the waiting room of the hospital the nurse called their names.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
The pair anxiously walked into the room after her.
"The doctor will be with you shortly" She said as she closed the door behind her.
The pair silently sat in the room waiting for the doctor to arrive. They looked up to see the door creak open.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith?"
"Yes." replied the nervous pair..
"I am here to explain the procedure to you. I will be inserting a large needle into your stomach. After I will withdraw a sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding your fetus."
The pair was silent as this sounded daunting to their accountant ears. The doctor sensing their unrest quickly clarified that this procedure was not harmful to the baby. After he calmed the nerves of the pair he then carried on describing the procedure.
"After I extract this fluid I will use it to create a karyotype of the fetus. This will be used to determine any genetic problems that the fetus carries"
The parents satisfied that this will settle their unrest and not harm their baby agreed to the procedure.
As they were leaving the room the doctor told them to return to the hospital in 1 week.
The pair could not help but sense a feeling of déjà vu as they sat in the waiting room awaiting the results.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" called the nurse
The pair stood up and followed the nurse into the office.
"The doctor will be with you shortly."
The pair sat there as they felt as if their stomach was in the floor. As the doctor opened the door the pair jumped up and bombarded him with questions.
"Please Mr. and Mrs. Smith sit down."
"Is it bad news?" cried Mrs. Smith
"Just sit"
The pair followed the doctors orders and sat themselves on the black plastic chairs. The white walls stared back at them.
"I am afraid the news is not good" started the doctor. "Your fetus has a gene mutation on chromosome 16. This mutation is rare and results in a cancer of his heart."
A moment of silence passed before Mrs. Smith started to cry. A dark fear started to wrap itself around the pairs' heart.
"I can preform an ultrasound to check on the growth of the tumor" the doctor offered.
The pair having received the worst news of their lives agreed. The ultrasound revealed that the tumor has wrapped around the heart.
"The tumor is too big to remove. The fetus will not survive past a few hours of birth. My recommendation if for you to consider an abortion. However if you would like to carry the baby to term we can make it comfortable in its last hours of life."
The pair faced with the biggest decision of their lives decided to a keep the fetus.
