Chay is quiet for most of the car ride. After ten minutes of uncomfortable silence, he finally opens his mouth to speak.
"Want to tell me what those shots were about?" Chay asks. I sigh.
"I guess I've been having a really bad day. My boyfriend Matt and I have been going out for three years, and today I found out he's been cheating on me. I just felt so betrayed, you know? Then-" before I could finish, Chay cuts me off.
"I know what it feels like," he says. "I um...I had a girlfriend. She was my high school sweetheart, so to speak, and I was sure we would get married. After four years of dating, she tells me that she's pregnant," Chay says with a sigh.
"Oh my god..." I reply, not sure what else to say. I've never been good with words, and this time is no exception.
"I was happy. No, more than that, overjoyed. We were twenty-one, plenty old enough to raise a child, but...I got a phone call, one day. From the hospital. Turns out Julianne, that's her name, got a DNA test for the baby. That confused me, until the nurse told me that it had been confirmed that Scott Daniels was the father of the baby. I didn't hear my name. I heard the name of my best friend. My best friend was sleeping with my longtime girlfriend. That was pretty much the last straw for me. Things got messy after that."
Chay's long rant surprised me, to say the least. I hadn't expected him to open up to me so soon. I mean, I hadn't even finished my story.
"Chay..." I start.
"Don't, okay? I don't want you to. I'm not even sure why I told you all of that. I definitely wasn't planning on it," he laughs. "I guess you seem like a trustworthy person."
"That's new. I've never really thought of myself as trustworthy," I replied. Looking around, I admired the fine city of Philadelphia as it flashed by in a blur of blinking neon signs and cars. Chay noticed me looking.
"Did you grow up here? You seem kind of in awe of it. The city, I mean."
"I grew up in California, actually. But I suppose I got bored staring at beaches and boardwalks, and moved here for some new scenery. My, uh, family, still lives there," I reply.
Chay gives me an odd look, but doesn't comment.
I sigh a little too loudly. Chay turns his head to look at me as we pull into a driveway leading to a gorgeous mansion. It was huge, way too much space for just one person.
He grabs my hand, grips it, and asks with his voice sounding like heaven, "What's wrong Courtney? Besides the fact that your house burnt down," he tries to joke with me.
I try to smile reassuringly at him, but it's still a little too soon, and it comes out more like a grimace.
"It's nothing, uh, just, oh never mind."
"Alright then," he says "Let's go in and I will show you around the house!" he exclaims. ()()()()()
I smile with the thought of how any person in that bar could have gone home with Chay, but he chose me, the depressed girl drinking in the corner.
Before I know it he is out of the car, opening my door, and holding out his hand. At this, I feel kind of appreciated, considering throughout the three years Matt and I dated he never did that, not once. Now that I think about it, maybe it was a good thing that we broke up. I deserve better than that asshole. Matt hurt me. But I'm done thinking about sad things, at least for tonight. I need to focus on being with Chay.
When I walk in the front door, I'm astonished. In the hallway, there is a medium-sized chandelier with small rectangles dangling down. I knew he had a lot of cash, but this? This was beautiful.
