Three years. That is how long I have been stuck on a deserted island with a tempermental skrill. A few weeks after he hatched, I named him Whirlwind, because he was as unpredictable as the weather and as furious as the wind. I had learned that the hard way several times. We got along well, occasionally...
Okay so he tries to chew my face off on a weekly basis. But I am determined to train him, because I have a feeling we could form a lasting bond.

The best bribes to get Whirlwind to behave was a piece of mutton. However, since that involved finding sheep, fish was a much better option. He had accepted me to the point where I could almost ride him, but his good moods didn't last very long. Today I am determined to actually fly with him. I approached with salmon in hand. Whirlwind perked up when he saw the fish, but I wasn't just going to give it to him. I took a deep breath.
"Look," I started to say, "both of us are stuck on this island. You can leave whenever you want, but you havent because, like it or not, you need me."
The dragon snorts, as if to refuse my statement.
"I need to get off this island, and you know it. You are the only way out of here."
After a moment, Whirlwind lowers his head to allow me on his back.
"Thank you."
I give him the fish and hold on tightly as he takes off.

We circle the island, and the feel of the wind rushing past is thrilling. I look down as we climb higher and smile.
"We can finally go home," I say.
Whirlwind looks back at me and give me a dragon version of a grin.

When we land, I am out of breath. We had done loops, turns and other crazy stunts. There was an understanding as we flew, I had felt our bond become stronger than ever. It was a wonderful feeling. It made me forget the pain of raising Whirlwind, and realize that the bond we had was special. We may not always get along, but when it came down to it, we could be a team that was so in sync that we could be unstoppable.
We could face any challenge and win.
Whirlwind interrupted these thoughts when he blasted the ground by my feet, signaling that he was hungry.

Oh boy...
