chapter 3

what was she up to...

I was sleeping  peacefully, until my sister bone had to wake me up. it was like the middle of the night for all I care! maybe it wasn't. I don't know I'm to lazy to check the time.

"Skull, wake up." she said quietly while nudging me. 

"Can't it wait till tomorrow." I said still tired. I didn't want to get up right now, I just want to go back to my own world of dreams and fantasy.

"We are going exploring." bone said with enthusiasm and excitement. this is what got me to awake, no way was I going to miss that! I love exploring! more than food. yea that's how much I love to explore. 

"Really!?" I said as I jumped up to my feet , like I was never asleep before, like it was morning already.  she nodded her head and flicked her tail towards the den entrance, "time to go."

Bone led the way out of camp, we were careful not to wake ant pack members. I looked at Bone excited, did I mention that I love exploring. The moon shone brightly down through the trees like the worlds flashlight. Its been a while since we have been out like this. I think its been like three years. Yeah, I know that's a long time. Before then we were only let out three to four times. everything has changed in this forest since then. 

As soon as we were far enough from the den, I wanted to go on my own for bit. But before I got far, I spotted something on a tree In the moonlight, It looked like a carving of some kind. As I got closer to the tree I saw that it was 'R+S' with a heart around it. Huh, I wonder what it means? Whatever it is it looked familiar. I signaled Bone over to look at this. Hoping she would know what it meant "look at this." I whispered to her. She studied the carvings closely, deep in thought. " I wonder what it means." I told her with curiosity. 

" THATS IT!" she suddenly yelled. I jumped back a little, startled by her action.  I believe she knew what the letters meant. But she didn't have to yell out to the whole world that she knew what they meant.

Bone turned to me and said, " that was the love sign between mother and father, the R was for mom  and the S was for dad." what she had just said had saddened me. how could I be so stupid and forget something like that. " What's wrong." she said, by the look in her eyes she was sad as well. " It's just I forgot all bout it." I whispered to her, barely audible. 

Before our parents had died, Bone and I had been their closest pups. So close that other parents were jealous of our bond. Then the day our parents had died, the whole pack was left saddened, some more than others. But the most saddened were my sister and I. 

We continued through the forest, the sun was almost up. The moonlight that had once shone through the trees, was now gone and was replaced with the warm sunlight. I had to stop and watch the sunrise. And admire its beauty.

I watched as the large glowing sphere rose slowly into the dull morning sky. Casting sunbeams in every direction while it illuminated the forest. I stared out the through the trees as the colors made by the rising sun changed, growing more vivid with the passing time. Making the sky more radiant as it climbed higher and higher into the sky. 

Then I realized that every morning, at sunrise the pack patrol would be out. I looked at Bone worried, just as she was about to lay down. hoping she would get my message. She pondered for a few seconds before it hit her. She got up quickly, I flicked my tail for her to follow. and we started to head back.

We silently went through the forest, we didn't want patrol to hear us. We were getting far when I heard twig snap. Someone was following us. Bone had stopped she had heard it as well. I started to lead the way again. Just as I started to walk again, a red and black figure came speeding towards us.

"WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING OUT HERE!!"
