Chapter 1: Fine Wine & Tears
It was my mother and step dad's nine year anniversary; we were all in a nice restaurant celebrating with them. I sat there sipping my water staring at how happy my mother was, my mother...she has three kids: Me, my little brother David, and my sister Marie. David is only five so of course he is playing with his spaghetti.
"Mommy! Mommy! Momma!" he called excited.
"Yes sweetheart" she turns to see the child placing spaghetti on his head.
"I'm a spaghetti monster! Roar!" he chuckles and my mother flips.
"David Nathaniel Hoss!" she fumes red as everyone stares at our table.
She gives a fake smile grabbing her red purse which matches her dress, her makeup shaded brown that compliment her eyes. She stands up grabbing a paper towel to grab the spaghetti off David's head, then grabs his hand and drags him along with her to the women's restroom to clean him.
Butch, my mother's husband and my step dad, laughs after she is out of sight he looks at us and shrugs. My sister laughs with him I just stare at him; he smiles with his muscular dark skinned face, a five o'clock shadow on his cheeks and a goatee around his full sized lips. My mother met him when he came with a crew to help her dream building a bakery form to life, therefore creating The Sweet Room. My mother comes back with David her makeup is running and she looks beyond annoyed.
"Butch Sweetie, can you start the car? Marie I need you to buckle your brother up, and Ryan I need you to pack all this food up and take it outside. I have to pay for the food." She orders everyone around but nobody complains.
"What happened to your make up?" Butch says examining her make up.
"David thought it would be funny to splash around in the water whilst I tried to clean him." She says rolling her eyes.
"Gotha admit, that is pretty funny."
"Only a tiny little bit of that was funny. Now go start the car." She hands him the keys and he rushes outside. On the way home David kept calling out everything he 'saw' while we were driving.
"Mommy a birdie!" "Mommy a dog!" "Mommy a krogers!"
Until my mother finally snapped and told him if he doesn't shut up she'll leave him on the side of the road. We finally arrive at home and David flies onto the couch grabbing the remote, Marie snatches it from him, then my mother snatches it and sits down turning on the cooking channel. I chuckle watching them and Butch comes up from behind me laughing he pats me on the back, and I almost fall onto the ground. "Sorry Ryan", he says chucked his voice is somewhat deep yet soothing. I begin to walk upstairs when Butch catches up reaching into his back pocket giving me a phone. "Here I almost forgot about this."
"What is this for?"
"I noticed that you're a little awkward around me so I thought 'If I get this for you maybe you will like me a little more.'" I thank him and head up to my room.
Chapter 2: School sucks
Passing period hits in the hallway, we only have a half-hour left of school. I grab my gym bag and turn to head to the gymnasium. My best friend and secret boyfriend, Duncan Jackson, sneaks up behind me grabbing my sides making me jump he laughs then pushes hair out the way of his brown orbs. His hair was a cinnamon brown; he smelled of cologne that he most likely got from a magazine. "Hey don't do that! You almost gave me a heart attack."
"Heart attacks at seventeen? Not very healthy are ya."
"Shut it." I tease pushing him playfully.
