LillianAfter I got changed out of my stage costume, I walked out back into the club where Dory was seated at a table waiting for me. Everyone who was here is long gone by now. Only the workers remained to clean up and close. Harold, the man I was conversing with left about an hour after we spoke.
"Ready to go?" Dory asks and I nod my head.
We get to the entrance to the club and Marty lets us out.
"That was a great show you put on tonight Lillian." Marty says complimenting me.
"Thank you Marty. See you later on tomorrow!" I say and he waved to us.
Dory and I walk down the alleyway and she speaks up once we get to where the front of the restaurant is. "So who was the hottie in the suit that you were talking to?"
"Oh, his name is Harold he was just complimenting my performance is all." I answer.
"Really? By that smile you had on your face it seemed like you were flirting." Dory says bumping my shoulder as she hails a taxi for us.
"Oh no, I am sure he was not flirting with me." I say giggling while blushing a bit.
"He so was, you are as red as a tomato." Dory says while pinching my cheek.
A taxi pulls up in front of us and we both get in. Once we're both settled in Dory gives my address to the man driving and he starts driving.
"One of the men he came in with, Charles I believe, is John's cousin."
"Really?" I ask.
"Yes, that's the only reason he gets in there. I mean could you imagine if Richard found out John was letting his lawyer cousin into his club. Especially since that prohibition law went into affect."
"Yes, that definitely is understandable."
"Are you sure it's okay if I stay with you? I am sure it would not be hard for me to find another place." Dory says.
"No, it is fine really. I actually like having a roommate, it always felt lonely by myself at the apartment."
"Well at least let me give you some money from stay there." Dory offers.
"There is really no need but if you insist."
Dory nods and looks out the window at the city lights moving past us. She has gone through a lot the past few weeks, just like I have. About two weeks after I began singing at Club Diamond, Dory got evicted from her apartment. She had been having money troubles for a while but did not inform me. When she came to work crying the next day and I asked what was wrong, she finally told me. Of course I offered to let her stay with me, after all my father is paying the rent but I am actually getting paid by Richard to perform. So I can make more money and that way I can save up faster so my father does not have to pay for everything anymore.
During the whole ride home I could not stop thinking about that gentleman I met tonight. He was very kind and sharing about his live. There was just something about him that made him a lot different from the men I have met, maybe it was the British accent. Until today I thought I was the only one who had father issues, mainly because of how controlling he is. If my father found out what I was doing he would without a doubt disown me.
